The dispatches expressed the opinion the movement was intended as a hint to the American forces that they might expect at least a show of opposition If they sought to penetrate further into Mexico than their present posi- tion, It was added, however, that there was every indication the move- ment was made without the knowl- edge of General Carranza, No estimates as to the number of men tnvolved was communicated. Officials here, however, basing their figures on previpus reporis as to the sirength of various Carransa garrisons n the vicin- ity belleve it could not have exceeded 1,60 men. Aovording to the dispatches it was the purpose of the commander who ordered the move to establish the force south of the most advanced positlon of Genersl Pershing's troops near Parral The most Important aspect in the offi- olal viewpoint here, 1t was intimated, Is the ndication that the de faocto govern- ment: has not full eontrol over all its military forces. 1t was learned today that the United Biates has acknowledged through Special Agent Rodgers at. Mexico City the receipt of General Carransa’s note sugkesting the withdrawal of the American troops. The Instructions to Mr. Rodgers went forward some days ago. (seneral Car- ransa was informed that his argument ‘was being given most merious considera- tion. Another message today told of addi tlonal brigandage in the Mazatlan region, which Americans are leaving. The diss order was described as due to bands of thieves taking advantage of dlsturbed conditions, General Cdrranza, the department has been Informed, has framed n new mining Jaw making some concession to the min- ing companies. 1t {s belleved by those who have studied its dotails here that it will not prove satisfactory to mining interests generally. PARIS, April 10,~One of the thrilling adventures of the Verdup fighting was the escape from captiure or death of a young lleutenant whose captive balloon was set afiro when a sholl mevered the {|truth was realized, but a full ten min- steel cable connecting him with the earth Though already mentioned In the cable dispatehes, the complete story from the Paris Journal is interesting, and follows: A report ran through the French Iines that a sausage balloon was ‘off. Thou- #undn of anxlous syss were directed 1o- ward the lttle speck which grew fainter and fainter in the distance as the south- erly wind wafted it toward the German positions. Four aeroplanes at once started In the vain hope of rendering assistance, but everyone felt that the observer was doomed. Minutes passed. The balloon kept ristng. Soldiers forgot the fire, the suspense was so terrible, “Then suddenly a tiny gray speck was #een to part from the balloon, which shot up 1,000 feet, but instead of fulling to enrth the speck seomed to be pulled up sharp in midalr, At last, with the ajd of glasses, observers saw that the speck Was & human body suspended from a parachute, A mlghty cheer rose as the Utes of suspense lasted as the parachute with Its human freight slowly descended, und finally landed close to the Prench lines' Notes Something Wrong. The young Meutenant thus described his experience: ““The first intimation that something had gone wrong was when 1 felt & slight shock, I thought the tele- pho able had parted. Twenty Minutes Falling. “For a few meconds 1 held on to the car by my handa, Then I let go. I must have dropped more than 100 feet before the parachute unfurled, and it was not an agreoable wehsation, Rut after that I did not mind. 1 was able to look about me, and felt the sensation of complete seourity.
