- e S - - KELP TO BECOME AN ENGINE OF WAR Hitherto Worthless Product on Pa- | cific Coast to Be Used in Mak- ing Powder for Guns. COMPANY FOR MANUFACTURE SAN FRANCISCO, Oct, 15 kelp crop of the Pacific ocean is to be harvested by a powder company 16 obtain an ingredient used in mak- ing amunition for the warring na- tions of Europe, it was announced. The statement is made that one of the largest manufacturers of powder in the United States has decided to gpend $5,000,000 in this enterprise fn order to obtain the chloride of| potash it needs to fill its war orders and which it can no longer obtain from Germany. It has long been known that kelp found along the Californian coasts is rich In potash. The difficulty has been to ob- tain the kelp In sufticlent quantities and to handie it afterward. Kelp grows in long streamers that reach from the ocean bottom to the surface, being floated by frult bulbs. But when the top of the Kkelp 18 reached, the long trunks are liable 1o sink to the bottom. Also, when the kelp is reaped, It tends, upon being ex posed to the alr, to become gluey and worthlesa. George H. Markell, secretary and gen- eral manager of the Hercules Powder company, now In San Francisco, has, it is sald, designed a submarine reaper, and contracts for an experimental reaper | have already been let, to be completed | within fourteen days. The reaper will eut the kelp in six-inch lengthr, which will be sucked by a pump Into a olg wire basket. The pleces of kelp are then to be taken ashore In roasting vats, the needed chemica] substances being after- wards extracted. The kelp may not be cut off In such a way a8 to deatroy it, as it 1s the protec- tion of spawning grounds. A trial off Monterey bay, made under government supervision as #oon As the submarine reaper is com- ploted. Mr. Markell stated that chloride of potash has risen from a former general market price of §55 a ton to well over $200 & ton.
