THE BEE Nebraska MAPPING OUT PLAN T0 HELP FARMERS Bankers and Agricultural Farm Heads Confer Over County Demonstrators in State. TEN COUNTIES HAVE OFFICIALS (From a Staff Correspondent.) LINCOLN, Sept. 27.—(Special.)~To map out a program to better the farming con- ditions of the state the president and the secretary of the State Bankers' associa- tion, with Carson Hildreth, chalrman of tbe Nebraska Agricultural Development commission, met for & conference this afternoon with Chancellor Avery of the university and Dean E. A. Burnett and | Prof. C. W, Pugsley of the agricultural | school. The meeting was held at the state farm. | A. C. McNish of Wisner, president of fibhe bankers' association, and W. H. ‘Hughes of Omaha, the secretary, were present. The meeting was called by Mr. Hildreth to interest the bankers, through their officers, in outlining a definite working program of assistance to certain gounties in acquiring farm demonstrators, to be presented at the October meeting of the Bankers' assoclation for approval. At the present time there are only ten counties in the state which have farm demonstrators. These are paid jointly by the federal government, by the state and by the local community. It is the idea of the bankers to help out certain counties with funds for a demonstrator, when those counties would otherwise be delayed | & year op more.by the lack of available | funds from the state or the federal gov- srnment. LINCOLN, Sept. 27.~— (Special.) — The, Lincoln Typographical union yesterday adopted resolutions to withdraw its finan- cfal support from the State Federation of Labor because of the stand recently taken on the liquor question. Resolutions to ll\l:! effect were passed after a long debate in which quite a num- ber condemned the action as hasty and| fll-advised. JUDGE ENGLAND STIRRED .+ OVER PURCHASE OF AUTO (From a Staff Correspondent.) LINCOLN, Sept. 27.—(Spefial.)—Judge W. H. England this afternoon asked the Lincoln city commission to investigate the purchase of a truck for the Lincoln fire department, made upon the recom- mendation of Public Safety Commissioner John Wright. England claims in his let- ter to the cofamission that the city was forced to pay $80 for an automobile not worth over $300 as & very liberal estimate. Although the , purchase was made through John Dahsen, a repair man, it was charged by England that the ma- chine really belonged to Fireman Kemp- 1in, & member of the Lincoln departmpent and an employe of the city, The city commission fixed Tuesday aft ernoon as the date for the hearing and asked the men who preferred the charges to appear and present their evidence. Mayor Charles W. Bryan is brought in indirectly by Judge Bxgland, as having signed and approved the warfant for the purchase of the machine, although in- formed that it was not a first-class auto- mobile. Both Mr. Bryan and Mr. Wright en- tered vigorous denials. Mr, Bryan said the signing of the warrant was & merc formal matter as large numbers are pre- sented to him each week for signature. Young Duck Hunter Accidentally Shot Near Plattsmouth PLATTSMOUTH, Neb.,, Sept. 21.—(Spe clal)~Raymond Maurer, aged 18 years, was accidentally killed here yesterday while returning from duck hunting. He was lifting a shotgun from the bottom of the boat when it went off. ‘The charge struck him in the left breast, making a hole into which a hand could have been thrust. Harry Forbes, who had started up the bank with the oars, heard the report and turned in time to see young Mauer fall into the river. Mauer was quickly lifted from the water and started to the nearest doctor's office in a buggy, but he bled to death on the way. The victim is the son of a farmer, who lives about five miles south of Plattsmouth He had come here to spend Sunday with Harry Forbes, NEW PAROCHIAL SCHOOL AT KEARNEY DEDICATED KEARNEY, Neb., Sept. 27.—(Spectal.)— The new $22000 parochial school, whish has been erected in this city through the efforts of Bishop J. J. Duffy of the Kear- ney dlocese and members of the St. James catholic parish, was dedicated on Sunday efternoon with impressive ceremonies. The dedicatory services were in charge of Rev. Austin Dowling of Des Moines, as- sisteq by Bishop James A. Duffy and Father Muensterman, the latter the local pastor. Among those who addressed the con gregation were President George 8. Dick of the Normdl school and Dan Morris, president of the State Normal Board. The State Normal school orchestra and the 8t. James cathedral cholr furnished the muslcal selections. The bullding, which is located midway between Central avenue and the State Normal school on Lincoln Way, attracts a great deal of attention and brings forth much favorable comment from tourlsts and strangers. The architecture is along the lines usually selected by the catholic church, being very beautiful in fts stm- plicity. Fremont Races Postponed. FREMONT, Neb., Sept. 2I.—(Special.)— Owing to the heavy rains of Saturday and Sunday the race meet scheduled to begin at Fremont today has been post- poned until Wednesday. GOVERNOR RETURNS FROM EAST | - (From a Staff Correspondent.) | LINCOLN, Sept. 21.—(Spectal.)—Attor- yney Genmeral Willls E. Reed has filed suit in the supreme court to settle the ownership of a strip of land three miles wide and eighteen miles long between Grant and Garden eounties. The action consists of quo warranto proceedings to prohibit Garden county from exercising jurisdiction and collecting taxes in the disputed territory. The further prosecu- tion of the suit will be In the hande of Grant county. The suit is sald to be a triendly one. Drainage Men See Governor. Four landowners in & proposed drain- age distriot south of Humboldt, Neb, called on Governor Morehead Monday to get his approval to irrigation plans, which had previously been disproved by State Engineer Johnson as inadequate to take care of excess of flood waters. The district includés 3,800 acres, and the length of the ditch will be six miles. The governor promised to take the matter up with the engineer, who ls now out of the city.
