CALLED FATHER OF BASE BALL BAN DIBGO, Cal, Sept. 10.—Albert Q. | Bpalding, well known sporting goods | manufacturer and San Diego capitalist, | @led unexpectedly at his home at Point Loma, near here, late last night. Death | was due to apoplexy. He was 6 years old. | CHICAGO, I, Sept. 10.—A. G. Bpald- tng, who died In Ban Diego, Cal, last night, gave up a FH-a-week job In a gro- Gory store to become identiffed with Shscball and was perhaps better known | $o the sport than any other man. Te | veterans of the game he was known as the “father of base ball” He become famots as a pitcher, one of the first to use the underhand delivery, and later became manager of clubs. Mr. Spald- Ing always used his influence to place the game on a higher plane. With his parents he moved from Bryon, T, his birthplace, to Rockford in 1863, | where he attended a commercial college. | But he soon learned he could make money | playing ball and joined the Forest City| club of Rockford, which made a repu-| tation for itself when it defeated the National club of Washington in 1867. Four years later Mr. Spalding joined the famous Boston Red Btockings, and | pitched the club to pennant viotories in the races of the National Professional association in I1873-73-74-T6. His longest, connection with active base ball play-| ing was with the Chicago club, which he | joined in 187 He was successfully its| manager, socretary and president until 1881, i Formhhldmtholdu! that the sport might be popularized in| England, and in the winter of 1574 after | the tour of the tamous Baltimore Orfoles, | he went to Burope. Everywhers he was | received enthusiastically. In 1888 and 188 he managed the first world tour of | the Chicago and All-American base ball | teama In 1878 Mr. Spalding became interested in the manufacture of sporting goods | and started a small shop in New Haven, | Conn., with a capital of only $800. The business grew and formed the nucleus around which the present house of A. G. Bpalding & Bros. was built. H TRADE MUSIC FOR TALK | BUT THEY GET SHORT END | The mail men's Dallas band visited the postoffice yesterday, and congregating in the corner nearest Postmaster Whar- ton's sanctum sanctorum proceeded to serenade him, without having first dis- covered that he was not present. Un- doubtedly they were desirous of hearing a talk from .r. Wharton in return for their misucal efforts, but no talk was forthcoming, and a disconsolate bunch of musicians trailed from the building after they had dlscovered that they had wasted their good music on the underlings of the postotfice.
