BRYAN ADDRESSES ABSTAINERS' UNION Secretary Says Patriotism is No Matoh for Appetite Which Aloohol Cultivates. LOYALTY TO BACCHUS GREATER NEW YORK, April 30.—Secretary Bryan sald in an address tonight un- der the ausplees of the National Ab- stainers’ union that the European war had developed that even patriot- ism was mo match for the appetite which alcobol cultivates in its vie- tims. The secretary was urging to- tal abstinence and referred to re- strictive measures which some of the belligererit nations _have taken against intoxicants. “There has been a' growing disposition in this country and throughout the world to emphasize the evils of strong drink.” Te said, “but even the most enthusiastio advocates of temperance have been sur- prived at the ghastly light which the wi 'n Burope has thrown upon the subject. It has been found that patriotism, that compeliing force which throughout the uges has led men to offer their lves for their country, is no match for the appe- tite which liquor cultivates in its vie- tims. Loyalty to Bacchus, Gambrinus and Barleycorn is greater than loyaity to Xing, or emperor or czar. The use of drink has been found to be mo destructive ar efficiency that the belligerent govern- ments, not on moral grounds, but purely on economic grounds have been compelled to resort to restrictive measurea The THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1615. 7* The Thompson-Belden Store | News of Spring and Beautiful Things | Thompson, Belden & Co.
