Brother George, that is, the representa- tive from Illinols—is going to run for sen- ator from Illinols. Brother Gene—repre- sentative from Massachusetts—is going to run for senator from that state. Brother Georgo will uphold mightly the banner of republicanism in the sucker state, and Brother Gene will fight under the oriflamme of democracy in the codtish state. If all the Illinols suckers and all the Massachusetts codfish get ripe, this great fraternal political trapeze perform- ance is going to be the most marvellous piscatorial display of recent times. In fact the Foss boys rather have it on thelr minds that when they get things warmed up they will have more hooks out for suck- ers and codfish than were ever before strung out from Quincy, Mass., to Quiney, m. Just as a modest starter Brother Gene is malling 400,000 coples of his recent tariff speech to the voters of Massachusetts. Brother Gene has a list of names that in cludes most of the voters of Massachu- setts, and he Is right on thelr trail with some violent views about the cost of living and its relation to the tariff. There Is some difference of opinion whether Brother Gene is going to run for governor or senator. The mnational pol- iticians all insist that he is going to run for senator; the Massachusetts folks per- sist that his ambitions be in the direction of the governorship. Anyhow, Gene is going to run, and he s going to run mighty hard. Now, as to brother George. George ran for the senate in Illinols two years ago, and although he confined his running to the homestretch of the campaign he came down to the wire so fast and In such form that many said if he had started with the bunch he would have been a sure win- ner. Anyhow, George has decided, accord- ing to the stories, that he will be a real, start-to-finish candidate for the very next senatorial vacancy in Illinols. The two Fosses are just determined to get on in politics, and there seems to be a lot of suck- ers in Illinols and a tremendous shoal of codfish in Massachusetts who sympe with their purpose. Here's a little story which beautitully fllustrates what a marvellous mix-up has overtaken the course of political affalrs in this country in the last year, Both of the senators from Minnesota voted against the Payne-Aldrich tariff bill when it passed. Bome of the representatives from Minnesota voted against the bill and some voted for It. During the campaign this fall, therefore, some of the republivan statesmen from Minnesota will be on the stump demonstrating that the tariff law I8 the worst ever, while others will be pros claiming from the rostrum that it has al} former efforts at tariff making backed Inte an acute corner and screaming for first ald to the Injured. That sort of thing I8 always calculated to muss up the political situation in & com- munity; and things in Minnesota surely are mussed up at this writing. The other day a good republican wrote to one of the senators and said “I wish you would send me about & hun- dred copies of your tariff speech, in which you showed that the dutles were ralsed instead of lowered. I think I could use them effectively to beat olr representative in his district.” The representatives in question being a republican who had voted for the tariff bill, and the senator likewise being & re- publican, although he had voted agalnst the tariff bill, there seemed some little Aiffi- culty determining what course would be dictated in the circumstances by a due consideration of the political ethics. So the senator went over to see the representative and ask him what ought to be done. Ho found the member and showed him the letter. “Oh, that's all right,” replied the rep- resentative. “I have just recelved threa letters from democrats asking me to send them copies of your tariff speech and say- ing that If they can get enough of them they can beat you sure.” And that's the way it insurrectionary territory. The demo- crats are going ,to beat republicans for voting for the tariff bill, and right over in the adjolning district the republicans are getting ready to beat republicans for voting ugainst the tariff bill. All prognos- tications indicate that the crop of puref ! politics is going to be bigger this year than ever before. is all over the wmfl (How Amateurs Can Clean Straw Hats | —_— The length of time straw hats may be worn and look fresh depends upon the at- tention given them. By straw I mean chip, willow, palin and fancy straws and crino- line, While rules for the care of straw applies to all, as far as dusting and brushing, the methods of renovating vary with the kinds of straw. For example, black hats should be freed from dust every time they have been worn in the street, for if the hat Is placed in a box covered with dust the latter will settle and the straw will quickly take on a gray cast, which it will be difficulty to remove. For removing the dust an old silk hand- kerchief makes an excellent duster for flat surfaces, and when places cannot be reached by the duster a soft bonnet brush must be used. The thin brush with long soft bristles answers the purpose best, and a short handle makes It convenlent to use. Desplte continued care, eun, dust ahd showers eventually cause havoc that re- fuses to yleld to brush or duster, and stronger measures must often be re- sorted to. With plain black straw hats of the sallor braid, a cloth wrung out of hot water and laid directly on the straw, patting it, will often do much to restore the lost freshness. Crinoline, too, may be treated in the same way If a woman will take care to preserve the shape. A gentle wiping with a hot, wet rag will be effective, and it will aid 1f| the hand is placed under the crown fol- lowing the rag as it is rubbed on the straw. | When the straw has passed beyond the | hot water treatment, then it may be brushed with black ink, In which a tea- spoonful of gum arablc has been dissolved. If the hat is quite clean and only a slight gloss is desired, brush over with white of g8, Bright straw ats will look like new by brughing with a polish made from half an ounce of pulverized black sealing wax added to one cupful of pure alcohol. The mixture should be set in a warm place and frequently ‘shaken. When of the con- sistency of..cream it will be ready for use. Black chip hats, on account of the dull finish of the straw, require an entirely different treatment. One of the best reno- vators when the hat is shabby is & mix- ture of one part black ink and two of olive oll, the same to be evenly brushed over the surface. Another way that will freshen a slightly shabby hat is to wash it with a pint of water mixed with two teaspoonfuls of al- cohol. If a hat has lost its stiffness this can be restored by sponging with giue water, then ‘pressing the brim with a hot iron, using a cloth on the straw to protect it from direct contact with the iron. Some black hats are improved by washing with warm milk. This cleans and at the same time supplies a slight stiffness, noticeable when the hat is dry. In cleaning any kind of hat always begin in the center of the crown and work around with the sewing of the straw. Fine bralds may be cleaned with gasoline, care being taken to keep away from tha fire during the cleansing. To clean leghorns, panamas, milans and other fine white or light straws (not col- ored), a solution of oxalic acid and water should be used. The proportions for this are one teaspoon= tull of oxalic acid to a pint of water. Brush this thoroughly into the straw. Rinse im- mediately in hot, then cold water. W off with a clean cloth and then pin a to the brim and hang to dry. Two sti of rag formed into a cross, each end, pin to the brim of the hat, will help to prese; the shape during the drying process. When still damp press into shape with & hot fron, using a plece of muslin over the straw. The pressing must be done on the wrong slde. When a white hat has become too sun- burnt to respond to whitening, or, in the case of light colored straws, becoming tob faded for then the better plan in to dye or retint the straw, There are any number of excellent dyes for straw hats to be bought at & nominal sum, about 10 cents for a quantity suf- ficient for one hat. Such dye is ready for use, and printed instructions are included. White chip hats do not clean sutisfac- torily. So the only plan s to keep them fresh looking by frequent dusting.
