The déun of the chapter of St. Poter has recently reorganized and arranged for show the so-called treasure of the basilica, which consists of all the church vestments, uten- slls and objects of adornment that belong to the basilica of St. Peter. This collection is valuable, as each object has its own his- tory dating back many centuries, and in course of time It has suffered many vicissi- tudes. The treasure practically dates from apostolic times, since & church was bulilt on the site of the Vatican soon after the martyrdom of St. Peter, and the early Christians who worshiped in it adorned it with votlve offerings and enriched it by valuable gifts. Nome of these anoient objects, has, however, survived to the present day, as very probably they were destroyed and ecattered during the perse- cutlons of the Christians. During the fifth and sixth centurles the popes again formed the treasure of the chureh, which the gifts of the barbariam kings and chiefs increased, but in the year 846 the Saracens despolled the church and its treasure and only a few objects were saved, among them belng a golden cross given by the emperor, Justin IL Pope Leo IV. again formed the treasure, wileh s00n became celebrated as the most val able collection in the world, since the grims who flocked to Rome to venerato the tomb of the apostle not only brought gifts and votive offerings with them but actually left their richest jewels and clothes An ths chunch, Besides every cardinal and all the persons of prominents who visited Rome made rich donations and each pope presented vestments, jewels and gold and siiver chalices. Still during troubled times the treasure was pillaged, especially during the sack of time in 1527 and as late as 179, when Napoleon ex- acted a heavy contribution from Pius VII, after the peace of Tolentino, One would think that little has been left of this valuable collection, which truly de- served the name of treasure, but so great was its value and 8o considerable the num- ber of objects it contained that even today, despite its repeated spoilations, it is the richest church treasure in the world. The collection includes a dalmatic presented to the church by Charles the Great, which 1 richly embroidered and studded with precious stones; two candelabra of gilt bronze by Pollaiuolo, six massive silver condlesticks, the work of Benvenuto Cel- lini; the valuable gold cross of Justin IL, g0ld chalices and pyxes, innumerable church vestments, and, besla many other minor objects, twelve stars of brilllants worth several million franes, which were given by Cath- olies throughout the world on the oocasion of the Jubllee of the Immaculate Concep- tion. The treasure of St. Peter belongs to the chapter and not to the pope. -—mm Letter in Chicago New: ' An Unscared President, Milwaukee Wisconsin. The president has let it be understood once for that while his nature is sra- clous, it s not compliant, and that while he desires to please the people, he is not o be stampeded from & ecourse that his knowledge and judgment teach him to be right. There are those who will be chag- rined to see him take this course. By the people will honor him for it. H 8o will accord him its meed of praise. It i well in the sense In which the president used the words at Rochester for a public man to get where he can say he “doesn’t & 6:% pm care''~where duty looms large in hig eyes and his ears become deaf to vulger clamor, B . ) The Key to the Sltuation—Bes Want Ada ) 4 »
