BRANDEIS STORES OMAHA GIRL JUMPS INTO CISTERN Without Apparent Cause Anna Home- lia Tries to Drown Herself. RELENTS ON STRIKING WATER Mark Houver, Iown Farmer, Dives Into D Clstern and Holds the Fainting Woman Tfil Help Comes. “I just doVe in head first and when 1 came to the surface, grabbed the woman around the waist and treaded water until they let down & ladder.” This was the simple statement made by Mark Houver, after he had rescued a drowning woman from a deep cistern this morning at 10:® aclock, at 1430 South Sev- enteenth street. He did not seem to think that he had done anything out of the ordi- nary and when complimented upon his bravery, merely said, “I just had to do it." The woman who was rescued was Anna Homelia, & domestic employed at the home of Ferdinand Streitz, 143 South Seven- teenth street,. Shotly. after 10 o'clock she went to a élgtern’ (' fhe rear of the house lo draw soime water! It is supposed that when shéreached ‘tha cdge of the high curbing a'sudden desire to commit suicide seized her Wn@ shp plunged headlong Into the gaping maoubh. After she struck the water her screams attracted the attention of neighbors and Houver rushed from the home of his sister next door, and, clearing a low fenee with a bound, reached the edge of the clatern. He saw tho woman strugglthg in the water, and mak- Ing frantic a@empts to' grasp the slimy sides of the well, Ho threw off his coat and hat plunged headfirst into the water. and The water is about twenty-five feet deep, and | as he came to the surface he grasped the woman's waist, and held her, now uneon- scious, while he treaded water until Lyman Blacman and: ‘Mre. - €. came ta hig @id, They tied A rope d a ladder and let | It down: and Houver ascended, carrying Miss Homelty in His arms. The womah was taken into the house .nd Police Burgeon Bishop was called. After working over her for thirty minutes she revived und was pronounced o of danger, Why Miss Homelia should attempt to take her life is not known. She has been In the employ of Mr. Streltz for more than & year and has always shown a cheerful disposition. She seldom received company and seemed contented with her home. As far as is known she has never received wentlemen callers, and her employer does oot think that a Jove affelr is Involved. This morning, however, Mr. Streits says she appeared to be Mysterical, but he could not acount for her condition. Mark Houver, the rescuer, lives at Ballx, Ia., and arrived in the'city Tuesday night for visit with his sister, Mrs, Marverd, 1712 South Seventeenth street.
