FIRST SEWER TUNNEL WORK “Burt Street Main Initial Construction of This Sort in Omaha. James Jensen, who has the contract for the construction of the Burt street main sewer, from Fifteenth to Twenty-sixth, will have the distinction of building the first sunnél work for sew I purposes, on an ex- tensive scale in Omahs. The sewer, from! Fifteenth to Twenty- first, will bo of ordinary construction. At about Twenty-tirst street hydraulle work ¢ will begin. The section to be) constructed by tunneling will be /L585, fest iin length, and for the distance of two blocks or more will be fifty feet below the street: le The deepest point ywill' be’ under” the ! ¢ 't Twenty-third street. To do the tunnel work involved, Con- tractor Jensen will have to secure special hydraulic machinery and will be’compelled to sink shafts ‘and bulld air locks. This is new work in Omaha, but the contractor-is laying his plans; carefully. The time limit for finishing the whole. job s December 1. The size of the sewer, will be eight feet six inches, outside measurement and seven feet six inches In the clear. It will be one of the greatest pleces of work of the kind ever done in this city and.borings have in- dicated that the tunnel part of the sewer should offer no particular difficultes, with the proper. kind of ‘machifery on the ground. The first workers In the alr locks will have to be trained men, but as the work progresses new tunnel men will be constantly broken in, so that they can work In gangs that will relieve one an- other, There is but one deeper sewer than this in Omaha, at about Rees and Twenty-sev- enth. That sewer was originally built on stilts under the direction of the late An- drew Rosewater, and' afterward a very heavy fill was made. The sewer is now something like -my foet under the strect lovel. « R — e — .
