It is clean, never coarse, has nothing that might be con strued as offensive, and bubbles over with fun of a jolly, nonsensical sort. The cos tumes are bright and clean, and are |ehosen with good taste; the girls are of | |all sorts and conditions as to size and age |and personal appearance, but all are work- |ess and each can do something. And the comedians are clever, so that the whole | |18 deserving the patronage asked for it.| 1t the first day's experience is to be taken |as evidence, the new departure at the | Gavety will prove a success. Twelve per- | formances a week will be glven, the com- | pany closing on Friday night in order to |make the jump to Minneapolls, the next |coming on from Kansas City in time to open on Sunday evening. Margaret King and Lon Hascall lead the forces, Miss King singing & number of songs and closing the first act by a sen- sational flight over the audience in an alf- ship. Willlam J. Kennedy is the chief of the funmakers, and his work as the “rube’ detective 1s as good of the rt as anyone needs care to see, Many ensemble num- | bers and general chorus work are afforded. The vaudeville features are of high order. The Courtnay sisters made a big hit last night with their songs, one having a ba | volce, and the other a strong contralto. The Seven Belfords are remarkable acro- | bats, one of the boPs especially capturing the spectators by his somersault turning He turns twice over, after leaping from the shoulders of another, and alights on the same shoulders. This is his most dif- ficult feat, but he does a number almost as startling during the turn. George Arm- | strong also scored heavily with his songs | and storles, t i N t ) t t Vaudeville at the Orpheum. Senora Rosario Guerrero, the Spanish | | actress, comes to Omaha In the course of a tour in which she has gained much fame. It was bound to be thus, for the woman's physical beauty would make ner talked about were she not in addition an actress of great ability. She, with a fellow | countryman, Slgnor L'Pagller, Is giving | the most novel sketch of the sesaon at tie | Orpheum. It is a terrific littls pantomime | llustrating the beguilement of a bandit by & dancer who happens into his lonely hut. First robbery, and then worse, are the bandit's desires. In the one he is defeated by his own amagement at the sudden revelation of the woman's beauty; In the second, by her securing, after much clever cajoling, his knife—with which she stabs him. There is no spoken word in the sketch and It tests, as pantomime always does, the ability of the actors to tell what they are thinking and feeling without say- ing it. Senora Guerrero is wonderfully alluring In a physical way and the cap'i- vating of the bandit seems perfectly reason- able. Jointly headlined with this exotic s the musical comedy “At the Country Club,” an offering of Jesse L. Lasky, who I8 a vaudeville producer almost without rival Those who remember “The Night on the House Boat” and “The Planophiends” will testify to this, and the present offering le better than either of those. Country club atmosphere s reproduced with delightful tidelity and the players and singers In nowise tend to destrox_ the fllusion, but rather to vivity it. In the leading roles are Jarvis Jocelyn, Frank O. Thornton, Ben Mulvey and Miss Eulalle Jensen, all of whom are altogether excellent. Miss Jensen does some inimit- ably clever burlesquing' of the conven- | tions of melodrama, grand opera and acro- | batics. . She 1s a young woman, with all the more frequently met charms of appear- | ance, and has besides an unrivalled car- | riage. Mr. Mulvey has the chief comedy | part and is genuinely and legitimately | funny. Mr. Thornton sings with a wonder- fully sweet volee a lovely song, “Beautiful | | Garden ‘of Roses” and Mr. Jocelyn also | | sings well and plays the plano in addition. There is a chorus of ruufclun cut young men, all of whom-ean sing, and four pretty and dashing“girls, Misses Wynn, Zimme- man, Hall and Crane. Besides these two acts | Dellla, novelty gymnasts, are worthy ot the highest praise, the pair being dis tingujshed by disdain of calling the audi- | | ence's attention to how dilficult are their | teats, and some of their feats are amazing. The bill also includes Signor Luclano Lucca, an ItaMan tenor, who sings also | in a wellnigh perfect falsetto; Eddle ‘3. ! | Ross, a dancing banjoist, who met an ex: tremely popular reception; Cunningham ana Marion, comedy acrobats, and Les Myo- | sotls, two premiere dancers from the ballet of the Royal opera at Munich, Hoston,” Sansone and | Fifty Miles rog. | “Fifty Miles from Boston” at the Krus. | | With enough well presented plot to be | really interesting in itsclf and here and | there a piquant dash of music and chorus | {not totally irrelevent, George M. Cohan's semi-rural musical play, “Fifty Miles from Boston,” can be approved Grace King In the role Woodls, the village trom at the of Miss Sade | postmistress of | Brookfield, the muck loved young woman |about whose woolng the tale so much de- |pends, is sprightly and interesting in her |part, pleasing alike In both her grave and gay-moods. There is a striking note of youth about all the actors Inyolved in the principal plot. Richard Bartlett | Westeott, the college boy just clalm his heart's desire, but net £o good as Dan ce. who takes the part of Dave Harrigan, ths unscrupu- |lous village dude and competitor for the hand of Miss Woodis.
