Jones, rector of the church, thought another attempt was being made to burn down the edifice, and she telephoned to the fire department. Fred Fowler, janitor in the Shugart block, charged With a statutory erime against lowa Smith, a 13-year-old girl, had a preliminary hearing before Justice Cooper yesterday afternoon and was held to the grand jury. Justice Cooper placed Fowler's bond at $1,000, this being $1.000 less than it kad been fixed by Judge Snyder of the superior court. Fowler was remanded to the county jail in default of bonds. “Lem” Hall, who attempted to commit sulgide by cutting his throat with a buteher knife at the home of his divorced wife on Stutsman street about two weeks ago, has recovered from the wound which he suc- ceeded in inflicting in 1is throat and was yesterday taken by Deputy Sheriff Leueh to the State Horpital for Inebriates at K1 oxville, having been committed to that institution for two years by Judge Greene of the district court. right prices. The sweepstakes trophy, valued at $400, presented by the National Horticultural congress for the best com- mercial apple display, was awarded to the Bolse Commercial club, whose display formed part of the Ada county exhibit J. A. Cmrr of Council, I1daho, won the trophy offered by the National Horticul- tural congress for the best general du play of fruits, open to the United States, Mexico and Canada. The county commer- clal apple trophy, presented by the Na- tional Horticultural congress for the best five boxes of five varlettes, was awarded the Washington county, Idaho exhibit. Silver Trophy to Nebraska. The Nebraska State Horticultural society carrled off the silver trophy donated by eeph. clation. This handsome sllver loving cup, valued at $300, was offered for the best general display of fruit by any horticul- tural society in the union. The Iowa State Hortlcultural soclety won the Council Biuffs Commercial club trophy, a magnificent silver loving cup, valued at 3500, offered for the best general horticul- tural display other than vegetables. As previously unofficlally announced, C. E. Mincer of Hamburg, la., won the beau- tiful trophy presented by the Stors Brew- ing company of Omaha for the best ten plates of winter apples for family use. The beautiful trophy presented by the National ‘Horticultural Congress as first prize for the best display of citrus and other subtropical fruits was awarded to the exhibit of the Citrus Growers' asso- clation of Houston, which was the dis- play from the state of Texas. The Better Fruit Publishing company's special, a beautiful silver loving cup, pre- sented by E. H. Shepard of Hood River, Ore., was won by J A. Carr of Councll, | 1dano, The Natlonal Stockman and Farmer trophy was won by C. E. Mincer of Ham- burg, Ta. The F. W. Meneray Crescent Nursery company trophy was won by F. O. The Twentleth Century Farmer trophy presented by The Omaha Bee Publishing company to the Natlonal Horticultural con- gress to be awarded annually to the state agricultural college team receiving the highest rank In the frult judging contest was won by the Nebraska team in competi- lton with teams trom Iowa and Kansas. Cooper, GOVERNOR PRINCE VISITS SHOW Executive of New Mexico Has Praisc for Exhibit, Governor L. B. Prince of New Mexico was the guest of Council Bluffs for a few hours ygsterday afternoon, during which i visited the National Horticultural congress frult exhibition. Governor Prince was en route home to Santa Fe from Chieago, where he attended the National Land and Irrigation congress, before which he spoke Thursday. He stopped off in Council Bluffs for the double purpose of visiting the frut show and paving his respects to his old. time friend, Judgd J. R. Reed, who for many years was chiet justice of the United States court of privete land claims in Santa Fe. Accompanied by J. P. Hess, former pre: dent of the National Hortleultural con- gress, Governor Prince made the rounds of the exhibits at the fruit exposition and occupled & seat In the balcony during the concert by the Liberati tand. Qovernor Shallenberger did not care for the truth when he signed the contract with Max Cohen of Chicago for establishing. & shirt factory in the state penitentiary for the manufacture of garments to be put om the market to compete with the manufee- turing establishments in Omahse and the state, asserted a member of the Central Labor union last night at the regalar meeting of the council. The governor, after granting & committee representing the Central Labor union of Omaha an audiencs, answered them by writing a which he promised that he would not sign a contract for the shirt and overall fac- tory. Instead of that, he has done so, all of which the members of the different labor forget If their expressions k a criterfort of their feeling. The governor was visited by & committes three or four months ago and respond-d by promising the laboring men «f Omaha | that he would not sign a contract enlarging the scope of convict labor in the state Members of the Central Labor unfon are very mych incensed over the aection he hes taken in affixing his signature to the | ccrtract.
