Naturally the prospect of landing it was not bright. The advertising manager of the paper called on the man and was told that he, the business man, had good evidence that advertising, in that paper at least, would not pay him, the “Help Wanted” ad being cited as evidence. A copy of the advertisement was shown to the newspaper- man, who sald he knew what the trouble was and offered to bet the contract that not one but & dozen replies could be had through his papers. The advertisement was rewritten in this fashion: WANTED-—Nea in family of two; sunny, £ Apply ate room and this office. capable girl for mald no washing; large, good wages. The day following the Insertion of the advertisement twen-~ ty-seven replies were recelved. The faith of the business man in advertising was restored and, ueedless to say, the paper got the display contract. THE BEE: (Centinued.) State Railroad Commissioners 1n Excited Debate Proposition to Adopt Interstate Class- ifications Wherever Practicable Causes Difference, WASHINGTON, Nov. 17.—Because of the contention of many of the members that an attempt was being made to limit the power of state rallway commissioners, an acrimonious discussion marked the open- ing of the annual convention of the Na- tional Association of Rallway Commisston- ers here Tuesday. The discussion arose over the, recommendation of a commission that thd convention endorse the idea of a fed- eral law giving the Interstate Commerce commission authority to prescribe uni- formity in classification for Interstate traf- fic and wrging state commissioners to make exceptions sparingly. Commissioner Gothlin of Ohlo contended that those who voted for the report bound themselves io maintain the classification fixed by the commisslon on intrastate shipments. He was supported by Commissioner Burr of Flortda. Commissioner Clark of the Interstate commission and ehalrman of the commit- tee which made the report declared the Ohlo commissioner was unfair in placing such an Interpretation upon the report. He sald the committes simply desired to call attention to the necessity of excep- tions not being ma “In the southern classification today & per cent are exceptions and 3 per cent are the original,” declared Mr. Clark. The Ohlo commissioner wanted the con- vention to strike out & portion of the re- port, but he was voted down by 15 to 3. The report of the committee was then unantmously adopted. Martin H. Decker of the New Y Pub- lic Utllities commission and pres. W .t of the assoclation addressed the convention and A. H. Smith, vice president of the New York Central, spoke on the progress of fety in rallroad operation. Mr. Smith ked for public, co-operation to reduce the dangers from trespass upon raliroad property.
