WEDDING MARCH BY REQUEST Young Wolks inm a Restaurant Find Themnelves in an Embarrass- ing Sitentjon. A good looking young woman followed by & young man who evidently took a great deal of pride In her appearance wandered into the restaurant early before there was much of a crowd there. They steered for a table off In one corner. He helped her oft with her coat carefully and with an air of being willing to protect her ageinst the world in general. When she took off her gloves it was seen that & mew plain band of gold encircled the significant third finger of the left hand, Then he handed her the bill of fare and they chose their eatables with a great deal of deliberation, deferring each to the other In the selection, with a tenderness and delicacy that sometimes s considered characteristic of the early stages of matri- mony. The orchestra started up, playing its first number of the evening. There weren't many folks in the restaurant then, as has been id, and when the two young folks, just naturally pleased with everything, ap- plauded the selection, the leader turned to smile and bow toward them. This seemed to glve the young woman an idea. She leaned over and whispered to her com- panion, As ghe did so one of her hands was placed In the middle of ths tablecloth, For answer he smiled fondly and then reached over and squeezed her hand. Then he called the walter. He tore a little plece off an envelope, wrote something on it and told the walter to carry It to the orchestra leader. It wes plain that he gave this Instruction, be- cause the waiter walked over with it. The leader read the paper, smiled very broadly and passed the slip to one of the violinists. - The latter grinned and was about to pase it on when he caught the eye of the young man, who obviously wasn't at all pleased with the exhibition that was belng made of his note, The violinist tossed the plece of paper on the floor and then bent over to search through a plle of music. He got the pleces he was after and Aistributed them to the other members of the orchestra, who put them underneath the regular second selection, for which they were tuning up. Meantime the restaurant was filling up, 80 that by the time the second plece was done with nearly all the tables were oc- cupied. Those in the near neighborhood of the young couple were taken, too. Then the orchestra, after the usual pause, began to tune mp for the special selection. The leader put up the “By Request” sign and then tapped on the rack before him. The orchestra troke into the well known strains of “The Voice That Breathes O'er £den,” which generally is spoken of as “The Wedding March.” It was a restaur- snt which late In the night, or rather early in the morning, 1sn't just the quietest place on earth, and some of the diners belonged to ‘the all night class, just dropped in for breakfast There was a broad smile on the face of some and there was a general search for the persons or person who might have asked for that selection. The young folks, who dldn’t count on attracting so much attention, kept their facgs turned toward | thelr plates and ate with Intense interest in their food It (s the custom for those who call for & selection to applavd the conclusion of the same, but these two did nothing of the sort. By this time both were rather red in the face. The orcvhestra leader, however, was not to be cheated of his acknowledgment. When the selection was through with he walted for a moment, as if for the applause, but it did not come from the young folks, Se the leader, with & mali- clous inspiration, turned in their direction and paused until the young man with a | ullty feeling that some one was staring | at him looked up. Then the leader bowed deeply. Of course every oue else in the place fol- lowed the direction of that inclination of the head, and the secret was out. There were more smiles and even some laughs, while the color could be seen mounting swittly up the neck of the young woman as she remained bent over her pla “Gee, that's & pair of honeymoners for fair,” sald one man to his table companion, another man, as they looked toward the Missourl Paclile— K.
