This they will probably do in preference to the forced neceseity of giving all the men a forced vacation of sixty days or in lay- ing off thirty or thirty-fiye men. If the tax collections are good this fall and more than % per cent of the police fund is available it may then be possible to give the men an increase in pay, pro rata, the last month or two of the year. Fire Chlef Salter has not yet figured out matters in his department and does mot know whether it will be necessary. to cut down his force on account of the Increase pay.
