(From a Staff Correspondent.) LINCOLN, April 8.~(Special.)—Some of the most prominent democrats in the state | have applled for the position of secret | o the State Banking board, which pays a ’NN'Kr\ of $3,000 a vear. This Is the very | | best job created by the late organization | for the relief of jobless democrats and naturally it 18 very much sought after. E. Royse at present holds the place at a salary of 82000 a year, and it is freely predicted that he will land the same job with the in- | creased salary whenever the governor gets around to making his selection Under the provisions of the banking law the auditor and the attorney general are | mere figureheads on the board, tnasmuch | as the right to assist in making appoint- ments s taken from them and the power vested solely in the governor. But the gov- ernor has his hands full and it is belleved | hie is not overly anxious to assume all of | the responsibility which goes with the en- forcement of the new law. For that reason {1t 1s likely, ®o some of those close to the governor say, he will not disturb the secre- | tary of the board. Commission Buys Motoreyele. The State Rallway commission is prepar- Ing to begin work under the provisions of the physical valuation bill and very shortly | will ask the governor to permit the ap- | pointment of experts to discover the phy | leal valuation of railroad property. The commission has placed an order for a $1,100 car to be run on the railroad tracks propelled by a twenty-horse gasoline en- | gine, in which its members and its experts will take rides over the tracks and In- spect rallroad property The commission has not yet figured what plan it will adopt when it starts in on.its work, but it will likely take up one rail- road system and finish with that before going into another. New Law to Redmce Ol Cost. State Oil inspector Mullen has received word that the Standard Oil company in- | tends to reduce the price of gasoline | cents a gallon, due to the operations, he says, of the new oll Inspection bill. The new law reduces the test of gasoline from 68 to 62, which will permit the introduction of Colorado, Wyoming and Kansas prod- ucts. He figures this will sive to the peo- ple of the state at least $175,000, based on the number of barrels of gasoline inspected and tested during the last year. Under the new law it Is set out plain that all ol brought into the state, whether for private use or for sale, must be tested, | and under this clause he expects to catch the railroads, which use a great quantity of oil, and which have heretofore refused to pay for the test inasmuch as they used it themselves. The attorney general has now in his hands for collection a bl against the Burlington for testing oil which he will endeavor to collect under the old {1aw through the courts. Knotty Question for Anditor. 1t will very shortly be iip to State Auditor Barton to pass on the question of whether a member ‘of the state senate can be in- terested in a,contract in which the state [ts a party. | The firm of Miller & Paine of Lincoln | has secured from the state board of pur- chase and supplies. several contracts for supplies for the state institutions let at the [ recent meeting of the board. In addition | during the month of January this firm s0ld to the state supplies for the executive mansion. J. E. Miller, a member of the {firm, is a member of the state senate and | was instrumental in passing the appropria- tion bills to pay the expenses of the state institutions. Auditor Barton when the bills come up to him will refer the matter to | Attorney General Thompson. The consti- | tution prohibits, or attempts to prohibit, lany state officer from being interested in | any contract in which the state is a party. \Roeck 1 The report and Shows Decrease. of the Rock Island railroad to the State Board of Assessment of its | value shows the roag has done business in this state during the last year amount- | ing to $1,414,455, as against §1,660,829 for the | | year 1907, | The earnings for the entire system for the year 1908 amounted to 354,486,530, against $7,3%,149 for the ycar 1%7. Some | time ago she walked from Eagle over to | Walton, a distance of about eight miles, | and looked over the house which the owner | of the farm, Mr. T. A. Glerens of this city had been occupying, and in the temporary absence of the tenant, J. T. Wright, went into the barn and threw down a lot of | feed for the stock into the mangers. At | that time Mr. Hornby, a neighbor, induced | her to go back home. | Wednesday afternoon she agaln walked over the eight miles and again started in to take possession of the place, until the nelghborhood became alarmed and tele- phoned the sheriff to come and get her. Deputy Sheritf Dawson started with an assistant, and the two had a brisk wrestle all the way to LiAcoln in bringing her to this city.
