Thus the rate war which some raflroad men felt was threat ened when President Stickney cut the rates ls averted and the hostile roads #orced under the rod by the Independent Tine's action. Local officlals of the Rock Island have received a wire from the headquarters in Chicago stating that on and after “Novem- ber 7" the proportional rates announced by the Chicago Great Western to Minneapolis would be effective on that road, the new tarift having been adopted just as the Chi- cago G Western had made It. The Chicago Great Western rates were Put in October 24 by this announcement: “Effective October 24, the Chicago Great Western wiil establish a basis of 9 cents on wheat and § cents on corn from Omaha to Minneapolis. When originating at points west of the Missour! river it will take a rate of 12 cents or higher on wheat and 10 cents or higher on corn.” Baturday the officlals of the Burlington made the announcement that the propor- tional rates have also been met by their company, and although the Burlington has mot adopted the Chicago Great Western tarlff, it has made an adjustment of Its through rates on grain to Minneapolis to meet the combination rate established, using the local rate through Omaha, plus the proportional rate out, making the rate for Minneapolis at about the present Mis- slasipp! rate. The new rate Is effective Monday. Makes No Diserimination. “This 18 not making any discrimination between Kansas City and Omaha, but just reducing the rates in all cases,” said an official. “For instance, Beatrice has the #ame rate to Kansas City as it has to Omaha. There are some points which do not equalize, but the gist of the new tarift is that the rates to Minneapolls and St. Paul hereafter will be about the same [\ the present rates to the Mississippi ri: g In reality making about a §-cent cut.” At the Northwestern headquarters no in- lormation had been received from the Chi- o office, but the local freight men sald that any cuts that would be made would be met promptly by thelr road. The offi- clals of the Milwaukee sald virtually the same thing, and all the competing roads now seem to be very eager to meet Mr. Btickney's new rates since some have taken tho step. ‘The Illinois Central freight men have had no word about any change in their present existing tariffs, but they all believe that their company will lose no time in making & rate that will be on & par with the ones already established.
