Willlam Sproule, freight traffic manager of the Southern Pacific, passed through the oity this morning enroute to his home in 8an Francisco. He has been in Chicago for the past five weeks attending to rou- tine business. Mr. Sproule sald: “1 expect to meet John C. Stubbs, gen- eral trafic director of the Harriman lines, and his party, which is on its way home from the recent conference at Salt Lake City, & short distance west of Omaha, and will return with them, leaving for my home as soon as I can make connections. “While business men in the east are complnlnln( about thy trade conditions and poor markets, we people out along the coast ate booming. There is much bullding and shipping is very heavy. The freight conditfons are somewhit congested, but not to the great cxtent reported. « The congestion on the northwestern lines of our system has been partially solved by establishing a prohibitory rate on lumber shipments from points on the Oregon co to San Francisco. This has cut down the amount of traffic and.it is probable that considerable shipping will now be done by water. The new rate went into effect No- vember 1, and the advance is from $ to $1.60 per ton from all mills on the coast or on rivers that are accessible to the coast. In reality this is a prohibitory rate, but it will not affect the mills in the interior, which still will be allowed to ship at the old rate of $3.10 per ten.
