Oid Indians In novels &re somelimes wise and cloguent, but no novellst ever painted a seer half o wise as Joseph. Joseph is & true philisopher and a deep student of human nature. Despite thelr awkward elish, some of Joweph's epigrams are gems that will compare favorably with the sayings of wise men of any age Interviewing Joseph is by no means & cinch; he I8 not exactly communicative. In fact, he 1= about as garrulous as a sphinx. He perhaps realizes that sllence Is goiden, and can buy a man reputation as a seer. He himself saye “Even a fool's mouth may look wise when it 1s shut.” He opens his, only often enough to prove that that is not his sole claim to wisdom. He has seen much since he came east that interested him; never, so far as the pale« face can judge—that paleface who, he says, scornfully, “is like the moon. ever changing his face"—anything tnat astonished him. His comments have ulways been shrewd. He has had his first ride tn an automobile, and, on the whole, prefers a horse. He has. halted his auto to watch the elevated train &0 round a curve and asked, in vivid panto. mime, If they ever fell off. On being as- sured that they did not, he has grunted his satisfaction “High up; good thin which, to the Indian, than “no kill man.” For the New York skyscraper he has no use. Living in layers does not appeal to him. A famous New York cartoonist was trying 1o draw him the other day—in both senses of the word, and in both senses he failed. Joseph would not be drawn. He In an Garder no kill horse” is more important stalked restlessly around; he finally even; went out of the room and stood outsille of his own door until the cartoonist came out, ; and then escorted him around, to other doors, perfectly courteous, perfectly pitable, so long as the rapid pencil strokes were not trying to transfer his features to paper. Once he took the pencil for a min- ute, to show the sort of house he liked to live In—and the sort he didn't like. Crudely but unmistakably he drew an indian tepee and a city skyscraper, and, indicatiug the entrance to one, said: “'Go in door, right off at home,” other, “Go in here, then l:: M::AM':I‘: get home here.” indicating a point near the roof. Then again: “In here; this my home —all; but here, ten. twent’, lve—not mine, not yours, not any one: Not like 1t."
