Cotton Dand, Wil Step in O Re n on his m Fre- An innovation that bids fair to become popular among patrons of the public library has been instituted by the librarian, M Tobitt, with the beginning of October. It Is intended to supply the demand for popular fiction which the library has been unable to satisfy under past arrangements. The regular supply of popular books is to be augmented by as many others as meces- sary, to be pald for by assessments of & cents per week upon the readers, The system is called the duplicate-pay-collection and has been used with-success in other cities. it will not interfere with the estab- lished registration system for the regular number of volumes purchased by the library and will have no application to this method whatever After the regular number of books has proved inadequate additional copies will bs purchased at the discretion of the librarian and may be obtained by paying the fee in advance, the books to be noted on tha library cards in the regular way and fines exacted for holding them more than seven days Only Popu ooks. Books bought for pay collection issuance will be those apparenily assured of great popularity for two or more years. In r words, those books that seem to have secured a firm hold ‘on the reading pu At the start but two novels are £o listed, “Lady Rose’s Daugh- ter” and “The Mettle of the Pasture.” JFrom six to fifteen extra volumes of each will be procurpd, as the demand requires. “No decrease whatever In free coples will be made.” sald Miss Tobitt. “The addi- tional bocks may be looked upon as aux- fliarfes to the regular supply. The fact that it will require thirty weeks' use to pay for most of the additional books means that only those of what may be termed permanent popularity will be used in this way.” The “open shelves" at the library will be increased In utility this month by placing thereon a list of the 100 best novels,” as prepared by lists submitted o the New York World. J. Cotton Dana, librarian at Newark, N. J. who is on the program of the Nee braska Library association at Fremomt next week, will visit Omaha on his returm. 4837 Mis:es’ Bhirred Double Skigs, 12 1o 16 yoars. Misses’ Shirred Double Bkirt, with Three- Plece Foundation 487—Double skirts much worn by young girls and are gracef and attractive. Th pistache green velling trimmed with ap- arian of Newark, N - pretty cne s made of lYque, but the design is sulted to all ma- terials that are sufficiently soft and pliable to allow of shirring. The yoke effect i pecullarly desirable, inasmuch as it con- fines the fullness over the hips. The skirt is made with a three-plece foundation and the two portions of the skirt proper. The foundation is carefully shaped and fits smoothly over the hips, while it flares about the feet. The under portion of the skirt, or flounce, is simply gathered at its upper edge and arranged over this lining, but the upper portion is shirred to form a yoke. The closing is made invisibly at the center back. The quantity of material required for the medium size is 6% yards 21 inches wide, § yards 27 inches wide or 3% yards 4 inches wide, with § yards 21 inches wide or 3§ yards 3 inches wide for foundation. The pattern 4537 is cut in sizes for misses of 12, 14 and 15 years of age. a nominal price, 10 cents, which covers all expense.
