Stickney Great Western railway rec pliment of the largest year at the special mecting Fr Commercial club of Real change, about sixty present. In in- | troducing the s eejdent Harrison | of the exchange said that he thought he | volced the sen s of all in saying that they felt highly honored at the presence | of the distinguished who had al- | ready perhaps done mo stir up the | people of Omaha than many citizens who | had lived here all their lives. Mr. Harrison | felt that even Mr. Stickney, who had been | accustomed to success must feel | gratified life Into the | city ! Mr. Stickne honored at the invitation to a exchange and that the Chicago rat | Western was as much interested in the increase of Omaha prosperity as any eiti- | zen, having put its capital here, brought out the following ideas In a stralght- forward talk, which Ideas, thought, | would lead toward prosperity { “The only way good be done for Omaha is for the people of Omaha to go ahead and do it themselves, It seems a melf-evident proposition that if every In- dividual does all he can to increase his | own business he Increases the aggregate | business.” | The speaker had been told that there | was a scarcity of houses here-residences and wholesale quarters. This was legiti- mate business for real estats men. They had not usually the capital to erect large bulldings, nor had the business men whoso | business grew faster than their capital It was the business of real estate men to find eapital wialch wanted Interest invests | monts to build these warehouses., There | were plenty such In this section and in | the east and the time was ripe. Mast Stand Up for City. “People can't bulld up a city—get men to build factories, etc, by publishing the fact that raflways coming here are dis- criminating against the city,” sald Mr. Stickney. “Any man wishing to locate would be frightened away. It s true "the rates as they exist are not conduclve to a grain market here, but this is no more so than the cattle rates were befors the be- ginning of stock yards. If a start were | made, without doubt the rates would be conceded. Frelght agents allowed rates to | &et out of line, but when there is business to fight for, then is the time. There is a difforence between fighting and scolding. No man in Omaha ought to admit that the clty has not the best rates. Chicago— grossly discriminated against—never lets it bo known. I feel that a grain market is no doubt possible here, but it must be care- fully worked up. It is not now necessary for the Commerclal club and Real Estate exchange to have committees, but later might exert beneficial fnfluence if this had not been worn out beforehand.” Taking 8t. Paul (because he was familiar With it) he said that In that city there kad been absolutely no demand for real estate for speculative purposes since 1578 and va- cant land could not be sold. In the last two years had como a demand for dwelling houses of from $2,500 to $3,500 cost. One firm had bullt fifty such houses last year and fifty more this year with the intention « ©Of selling them. They took, say, $1,00 In cash down, then mortgaged property for about what it would sell for, say $1,500. Then took second mortgage, say $1,000, from occupant, to be paid for in installments of ®bout the proportion of rentals. In this way they had got money out of lands and kept it in elrculatior. On motion of H. T. Clarke, sr., the ex- change thanked President Stickney for his | remarks. P. E. Iler, D. C. Patterson and D. H. Mercer endorsed the ldeas of the speaker. ¢ tne Chicago ived the fng General Condition " | com- attendance of the ay in the Estate ex- | $1 and $1.50 Large Lace Collars at 49¢ Each prics one square guest, in the best tailor shops and by the best tailors in the coun- try, all hand sewed, with pad- ded shoulders & self-retaining fronts.
