X press — BIBLE IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS Father Willlams Expresses Some Opinions as to the Points / Involved. . OMAHA, Sept. 18.—To the Editor of The Bee: I do not think Mr. Rush and I would stand far apart as to the moral expedi- ency or profitableness of reading the bible in the public schools under present condi- tlons of a divided sect-ridden Christianity. T would not presume to discuss with him the legality of doing it under our present constitutional provision on sectarian In- struction in the public sthools. As a lay- man in law, however, it goes without say- ing that, as to Its legality, T would take the judgment of a trained jurist like Judge Sullivan in preference to ten thousand opinions of men like Mr. Rush or myself. But that is not what I started out to say. Mr. Rush lays his chiefest emphasis in his opposition to reading the bible in the public schools on the alleged facts that King James' version would be read In preference to the Douay version of the bible; that the former is sectarian; that it does not contain the whole bible; that it contains some 600,000 variations from the Douay translation, and such like. There is more passion than sound rea- soning in all this. Mr. Rush would be uh- willing, at least the Roman Catholic church would be unwilling, to have the bible, in any version, read in our publle schools. If a reprint of the Douay version, minus its ecclesastical foot notes, wert made tomorrow, and cffered as a com- promise for use in the publle tchools, the Roman Cathollc authorities would not consent to its use. Of course they would prefer its use to (he Anglican version of the bible; but they would have nelther without protest. The question, then, is not as to versions, but as to the bible itselt being read by other than Roman Catholle teachers or instructors. Again, as to the 600,000 variant readings of the Anglican translation; Mr. Rush is scholar enough to know 'that {f a company of the ablest Roman Cathollc scholars were authorized to make an independent translation of the bible tomorrow, whether from the Hebrew and Greek or from the Latin vulgate, a like number of variations would occur in their translation when compared with the Douay translation, and that without chang. ing the sense or truth of the bible in any material point or any point affecting essen- tial dootrine of morals or dogmas. P sonally I would be perfectly willing to have the Douay version of the bible read in the public schools, if it could be gen- erally agreed to and authoritatively adopted. 1 would not, of course, consent to the use of its ecclesiastical notes, but to the version itself, apart from Its in- ferior English, I could urge no insuperable objection. Doubtless, as in the Anglican translation, an ecclesiastical bias could be discovered in the text, but I know of no variation, in the one from the other, to prevent the use of elther, rather than that our youth should be taught prac- tically that the sublime moral teaching of the bible is no part of the education that 18 necessary to make them fit for good cltizenship in the state, Perhaps Mr. Rush can tell us just wherein and how King James' version is sectarian in any grave or dangerous mi translation, affecting dogma or morals; except, of course, that, for Roman Catholics, it has no ecclesiastical authority, any more than the Douay version has for the rest of us. I am speaking candidly, not for controversy. I have both the Douay and the Anglican translations, and, while I prefer the latter, chiefly because of fits nobler English, yet 1 am not aware of any violent or essential variation between them that affects elther morals or dogma. If Mr, Rush can polnt out any such variation I shall really feel under personal obliga tion to him. The verbal varlations of course exist. Differences as to the exact semse of obscure passages of course exist, That is inevitable. But what 1 would really like to have Mr. Rush point out is what essential or grave doctrine of faith or morals is involved as between the two versions of the bible, the Douay and the Anglican. Are not all the wretched differ- ences that exist between Christians tofay the product of our different Interpreta- tions of the same words rather than of different translations? JOHN WILLIAMS.
