MRS, COATS RUN DOWN BY SWITCH ENGINE Was E: voring to Drive Fowls Out of Danger When Struck and Crushed by the Pass- ing Locomotive, In attempting to drive some ducks from the raflroad tracks to prevent them from belng run over by a switch engine Mrs. J. P. Coats of Fourteenth and Burdette streets was herself struck by the engine and severely and dangerously wounded. The wheels passed over her right leg below the knee, and her foot, necessitating am- putation; fractured her left elbow and produced a bad laceration on her arm and injured her internally. Mrs. Coats was at once taken to her home by tho train crew and her husband and later removed to St. Joseph hospital, where Dr. Bishop and Dr. Ramsey, the railroad surgeons, amputated the injured leg just below the knee. At noon the injured woman was suffering severely from the shock, and, owing to her ad- vanced age, her injurles are considered serious. Dr. Bishop says that unless the internal injurfes are worse than at first supposed she will recover. Mr. and Mrs. Coats conduct a small duck farm near where the accident occurred and it was to save her ducks that she was injured. A switch engine on the Belt line was at work near where the ducks were feeding. Mrs. Coats and her husband went out to drive the ducks from the tracks. Mrs. Coats rushed onto the tracks as the ngine was heaving in sight, but appar- ently did not notice how close it was upon her. The engine crew called to her and attempted to stop, but too late. EY-HNED Go1ld Fillings in front teeth are conspicuous—PORCELAIN FILL- VERDICT GUILTY FOR MORR13 foldier Murderer is Oonvioted of Man- slaugkter by the Jury. SENTENCE UPON PRISONER IS DEFERRED Jurymen Have to Have Additional tructions Before Agrecing on What Return They Should Make to the Court. The jury in the Morris murder case came in yesterday with a verdict of manslaughter as charged in the indictment. The verdict involves a maximum sentence of ten years. Bentence will probably be pronounced by Judge McPherson Friday, when the Linnler case is taken up. The jury arrived at its verdict in the case about §:30 Tuesday night. The case was given to the jury shortly atter 3 o'clock Tuesday and several ballots were taken prior to 6:30 o'clock, when the jurymen went to supper and were directed to return to the federal court room at 7:3. Judge McPherson was walting at the court room for them and the jury flled down from the jury room to the court room with the an- nouncement that they could not agree. The Qquestion at issue was the length of punish- ment that would be infiicted on the de- fendant under certain verdicts, The jury then returned to the jury room under in- structions by Judge McPherson to arrive at a verdict If they could, after a ballot or two, and then go to their hotel in charge of the ballift for the night and report find- ings to the court at 8:3 in the morning. The verdict was reached at 8:30 Tuesday night. The accused, Edward Morrls of the Twenty-fifth United States infantry, was in the court room when the verdict was an- nounced. He seemed somewhat surprised, as it was evident that he was confidant of acquittal. The delay In pronouncing sen- tence is to give the attorneys for the de- fense an opportunity to flle a motion for a new trial. It fs hardly possible that this will be done, 88 the fact that Morris killed his comrade, Henry McKee, at Fort Nio- brara on the evening of September 17, 1902, {s admitted by the prisoner, but only his thelr parents. We had no trouble in induc- ing practically all of the reputable cigar dealers to discontinue the payment of cash and checks, but some of the less scrupu- lous dealers persisted in the business. “Accordingly we organized several weeks ago, with about seventy-five members, and decided to put a stop to cash and check machines in every store in. Omaha. The only way to do this was to get an ordl- nance enacted under which the offending ones.may be prosecuted and fined. After the ordinance passes our assoclation will keep close watch on all stores and vigor- ously prosecute anybody found violating its provisions.” —— All kinds of up-to-date amusement features at Lake Manawa. — Low Rates (o Boston and Return in June and July Via the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern rallway. CIGAR MEN PUSH ORDINANCE Organized Effort Among Them to Regulate All Slot Machines. About seventy-five retail cigar dealers are behind the slot machine ordinance intro- duced in the council Tuesday night by Mr. O'Brien. So far as known there is no op- position to the ardinance among the coun- cllmen and its promoters therefore expect it to be passed next week “Some time ago," sald one of the clgar dealers, “all of the best men in the trade realized that the operation of slot ma- chines with cash prizes and checks that might be played back into the machines was a great injury to the business. A good many young men would play several dollars into a machine without getting even a clgar for their trouble, and of course some of them would get sore and walk out without making a purchase. S0, you see, we have something of a selfish interest in trying to put a stop to the check machines, but it is selfish merely so far as it protects our customers against losses which some of them are unwilling to stand. “The worst feature of the machines, how- ever, is the cash play, which is gambling pure and simple. Upon Investigation we ascertained that the cash paying machines were patronized as much by boys by men. Some boys woulu lose thelr wages and then & complaint would be made by For time cards, regular and spectal rates, etc., send postal card to H. L. Purdy, Trav. Pass.
