Notable Men Own Omaha Realty »s#Names of National Prominence Pinned in Good Faith to City Propertystst.s Among owners of Omaha real estate there are a number who have attained more than average prominence In national and international life, and, although the number is being reduced generally, as Omaha people come to own a greater pro- portion of the property of the city, thore are still a few whose names would not sound strange on either side of the At- lantic ocean. Probably the most famous owner of Omaha realty is Admiral Dewey, who owns a few town lots upon which dwelling houses are constructed. He secured this property by reason of ownership in a New England financial institution which made loans on the land and was ultimately forced to take the property. His local agent here s Thomas Brennan. The most valuable of the city property owned by persons of more than average note is the holdings of the Folsom estate, which Includes Mrs. Grover Cleveland. Part of this property is the site of the Boston store, while one of the lots was sold to the government for the site of the present federal building. President Rutherford B. Hayes at one time owned a number of lats on North Sixteenth street, and as there s now cur- rent the rumor of the “Willard sideboard” which, in the mind of some imaginative writer, was preseated Lo the wife of the former president because of her well known total abstinence views, it may be interest- ing to recall that President Hayes' prop- erty was the Osthoff saloon. William Pitt Kellogg, who made things Interesting for himself and the federal government at New Orleans in 1873, when the government of the state, as repre- nted by himself and a few other persons of republican political tendencies, was driven into the customs house by a number of the politically incensed residents of the Crescent City, 18 a holder of some valuable property on Farnam street adjoining tho home of Senator Millard. It is said that this property is to be improved in the near tuture. The “alien landowner's law” f{s respon- sible for one landlord of forelgn title in Omaha. He owned some Nebraska farms and when the law went into effect traded the land for property on St. Mary's avenue, near Twenty-fifth street. This is Sir James Reckitt of Hull, England, who owns the property jointly with Rev. Benjamin Glasgow of the same city. One of the wisest alien owners of Omaha reality is Horace Plunkett, for a long time union member of Parliament from Ireland. who was defeated at his last campaign by Colonel Arthur Lynch, who is now serving a life sentence in an English penitentiary, after being sentenced to death as a traitor. Mr. Plunkett has taken up the policy of improving his Omaha property and is mak- ing It pay & good return upon the invest- ment. He owns the Crounse block, a new building on Dodge street near Sixteenth and one of the best apartment houses of the clity. The heirs of the writer of ‘“Thanatopsis Willlam Cullen Bryant, are owners,of con- siderable property in the city, consisting of dwelling houses mainly in the north- ern part of town. They are represented locally by W. T. Graham and include among their number F. N. Goddard, a New York editor. Senator Hopkins of Illinois is interested fn Omaha real estate to a slight extent, being a shareholder in the company which owns the Winona apartment house. The Havemeyer family is also Interested to a limited extent in Omaha houses, both in the business and residence districts. These are mot owned by the sugar Kking, but by brothers and nephews. Senator Paddock, who resided at Beatrice, was an early resident of Omaha and in territorfal days acquired a considerable amount of Omaha real estate, which he held at the time of his death, and some of which 18 still held by his heirs. Hiram A. Tuttle, ‘a former governor of New Hampshire, owns some dwelling houses in the city which he received as his sharo in a defunct loan company, which at the time of its liquidation held securities on Omaha land. Senator Spooner untll re- cently held some lots in the city acquired in the same manner, but they have been sold. Real estate dealers speaking of this sub- Ject say that the proportion of foreign and nonresident owners of Omaha real estate is gradually decreasing, as the residents become able to invest surplus at home. Sald one of them: At one time 90 per cent of the savings banks and trust companies of New England were holders of more or less Omaha prop- erty, which they had been forced to ac- quire through foreclosure of mortgages. Today the proportion will not be more than 50 per cent, as residents of the city hava purchased the land at figures which would not be considered by the present holders. This tendency is ircreasing at a fair rate and the time Is not far distant when Omaha will practically own the land upon which Omaha stands, and the nonresident owper will become a rarity.” FOR SALE—REAL ESTATE, FOR SALE—REAL ESTATE.
