COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Bulls Boost Giain Pit Prices on Board of | Trade. | PROVISIONS ARE EASY AND CLOSE LOWER Canses Combine to Elevate Wheat, Which Takes and Onts Higher in Spite of Desultory Market. May CHICAGO, March 11.—Statistics were de- cidedly favorabic to the bulls in the wheat pit_today and prices ruled sirong, May closing 1@1%c higher. May corn was up 3 and oats were ‘e higher, Provisions were easier and the close on the May pro- ducts was unchanged to e lower. There was marked improvement in trading in wheat and prices had an upward tendency. The opening was easier on the bearish government report, showing a large reserve in the farmer's hands and on easler cables and May was a shade to Wake lower, at T4kjc to T4e. Es- timates of only ‘1,200,000 bushels shipment from Argentine for the week, & better cash and export demand and a decrease of 2,400,000 bushels in the world's visihle as Teported by Bradstreets, against 1,025,000 bushels a year ago, all combined to create @ bullish sentiment and there was am ac- tive commission demand the entlre day. Realizing sales caused temporary de- clines, but the demand was too wreat for the ket to withstand, and prices wrad- ually advanced. Late In' the day on addi- tonal buying, May sold up to Tic. The close was at T6%c, a net gain (f 1@1igc. Primary recelpts 'were small at 350,00 busihols against 504,000 bushels a year ago. Minneapolis and Duluth reported receipts of 7l cars, which with local receipts of twenty cers, none of contract, made total receipts for the three points of 231 cars, inst 320 cars last week, and 301 a year was of a somewhat ith_the dullness quite but_prices were in; enced largely by 'tae actlon of whea T the "\indertone was _strong. _The Weather was still unfavorable and cables Were steady. There was little corn for sale at the outset and when shorts tried to cover they were forced to bid up sharply, especially for May. An_ easier feellng ' developed later on less general demand, but the late strength In wheat caused another advance and the close was firm with May %c higher al {1%@{T%c, ter selling between 7% and 47%c. : ceipls were 218 cars, with one of contrac ade. Provisions were firm earl: ) with the strong hog market, but scat: tered lquidation and a weak Close at the yards caused a reaction and the closs was ateady. A feature of the trading was a ood demand for lard from forelgn houses. New Yorl exchange par. Flurried Market C with at Le Temporary Upward Tendency. NEW YORK, March 11.—The constant fluctuations in ' today's stock market re- flected an unsettied and uncertain state of mind on the part of the professional | trading element and J¢ required the utmost | agidty by that part of the professionals known as scalpers to follow price changes he average level, however, was gradually fted and the market closed with one of | the upward flurries in progress and at about the top Ievel of the day. There was a senstble relaxation of the pressure of forced liquidation, which the recent caliing of loans by the banks has caused and some recovery due to the covering of short con- tracts by Dbears was thereiore normal. Loans én call were made during the most active part of the day's money market at 54 per cent, and & per cent was the max- ‘mum. For time money, lenders wére dis- posed to hold firmly for'a 6 per cent rate, Lut the borrowers showed less urgency to secure funds, for the longer especially period: themselves with and contented oans for three to four months where no concession was allowed for six months period. There was nothing to show the course of this relief to the money situn- tion, unless it might be the result cf liqui- dation in the stock market. The higher in- terest rates resulted in some lending for the account of interfor institutions, which are also reported to be calling some loans at hcme for the purpose of making these loans in Wall street. Sterliff ex- change was considerably firmer today and there was quite a faliing off in the of- ferings of loan bills. The advance in money rates In London and the jump of sterling at Paris of 1 centime showed the ob- stacles arising to the extensive borrowing abroac for account of New York, which has been in progress. The sub-freasury also continues its road upcn the New York money supply, the lose to that in- stitution yesterday 'amounting to $673,000. This brings the absorption since Friday up to the_close cf business yesterday to 33,147,000 Since the first of February this government institution has withdrawn from the New York money market something like $20,000000. This state of affairs in a period of stringency gave special signifi- cance to the visit in Wall street today cf the secretary of the treasury. The con- viction was general, notwithstanding the official disclaimers, ‘that some measures of rellef for the local money situation were in contemplaticn. This was really the strong underlying Influence on the improved speculative sentiment, though active play was still made on 'the con- changing rumors regarding the contest between the Harriman and Keene interests in Southern Paclfic. A _turn against the shorts in Metropolitan Street Tallway was also a factor. Official denials of published charges against the financlal fAccounting of the company was the basis of the ftrong upward movement in_that Stock. The advance in the price of copper gave an ndditlonal impetus to Amalga- Thated. The conviction that treasury measures would relfeve the money ymarket Seemed to be especially strong in Koreign money_ceuters and Induced buying on the 0 tent of upwards of 50,000 shares. This w an important infiflence in the early firm- nese. Nothing was learned up to the time of the close of the market of the detalls of any measures to be adopted by the treas- ury department. Cotton NEW YORK, March 11.—COTTON—Mar- ket opened steady at a decline of 3 pointm to an advance of 3 points and following the call displayed considerable hesitation and was a shade easier for a brief interval be- cause of disappointing cables and the out- look for heavier receipts for the day; then turned very strong on continued flood re- ports, bullish accounts from New Orleans and an improvement in the English market with shorts leading the buying, particularly of March. The bull leaders aiso actively supported the market and the advance, sluw at first, became more rapld a orders fvere reached and commi houses became more Insistent parchaser The Liverpool market, which at the tim of the New York opening was about 67 points higher, closed at an advance of 1 @12% points, and private cables from there indicated a' very firm condition, with de- mand active and excited. The New Or- leans market also showed leading strength on the early advance, the spot markets of the south reported & hard fnishirg te dency and all sorts of rumors were circ lated. The advance thus encouraged prices up to 10.06c for March and 10.02c for May, or to within about 21 and 15 points of the highest of the season on these two options Terpectively, with the general list at that time showing a gain from the opering of 4811 points oa the neardy positlons. But this level proved attractive to those having pronts to take and jn the early afternoon cng cotton began to come up in the mar- ket In volume. It was rumored that the bull clique were liquidating and Wall street I who had recently circulated bull- views of the situation sold more or less openly.
