Dentitute spou Mrs. Bert Waugh, residing at 3022 Lind sey street, called at police headquarters | yesterday and told a pititul tale. Mrs Waugh stated that her husband's fondness | for liquor had reduced the family to a state | of almost complete destitution, and as a consequence of his squandering every cent | which he might chance to earn for drink, | there was but little food in the home. | “I have four small children at hnma; now,” said the weeping wite, “waiting for me to return with food. God knows that 1 am unable to get it. They have insuf olent clothing to withstand the raseges of this winter and are being kept in the house to proteot them from lliness. We are with- out fuel. We have recelyed some f@od and fuel trom neighbors.” | Mrs. Waugh was accompanied by her | mother, Mrs. Mattie MeManigal, with whom she resides, and who also made a plea for assistance. Waugh has wealthy parents in | Marcellus, Mich., from whom he receives money, but which, his wife says, never reaches her hands. He was fined $1 and in the police court Friday for being found drunk. Mrs. McManigal will prefer s against him for neglecting his fam- The two women were directed to the mayor for temporary assistance RATES ON EXCESS BAGGAGE Jobbers Induce R to Postpone Enforcement of New Schedul, rond Companien The protest of the jobbers at Missourl river points against the increase in the minimum charges for excess baggage has resulted in a temporary agreement whereby the railroads will postpone the enforcement of the mew rule from March 1 until April 1 and will give the jobbers an opportunity to meet the general passen- ger agents some time during the month ot March, when the situation will be can- vassed and final action taken in the matter. Some of the roads had gone so far as to fssue Instructions to agents, making the order effective March 1, but these in- structions have been superseded. In the time between now and the date of meet- ing the jobbers on the river will make arrangements to send a strong delegation to the meeting of the passenger agents, and they hope to have the present rates continued. NEW LEASE FOR FIELD CLUB County Board Extends Term on Forty Acres the Howpital, At yestcrday's meeting the Board of County Commissioners granted the re- quest of the Omaha Field club for a six and one-half yoars' extension of the club's lease on a forty-acre tract. adjoining the club's grounds and owned by the county.
