MUST NATIONALIZE ALL INDUSTRIES Indiy 1 Competition is Powerless, as Combines Have Corralled Most tal, Which Might st Them. Avatlable Ca; Be Used Agal CHICAGO, Jan. 10.—"Our Industries Are in Process of Development; Nelither Destroy Nor Arrest Them, but Nationalize Them" was the tople of Peter S. Grosscup, judge of the United States circuit court, at a ban- quet given at the Hamilton club tonight. Judge Grosscup said In part: The attorney general has outlined his views and perhaps the views of the present administration. I ‘regret that the sugges- tions thus made do not go to the core of the disorder. Their main purpose appears to be to nurture competition by individuais, They lay no condition or restriction upon consolidation, present or future. The: would let the consolidations alone, but foll their efforts for monopoly by individual competitors elieve the attorney general over-esti- mates the efficacy of court proceedings in his purpose to compel men to compete. In 1 resuits, whatever their fidelity to the law, courts are almost as heipless in com- manding men to compete who do not wish Lo compete as parents in seeking to compel young people to live apart who wish to live together; or the law commanding husband and wife to live together who are deter- mined to live apart But on considering the creation of com- etitors as the main portion of trust legis- ation the attorney general misses the only natural and effective remedy at hand. The real competitor of the future must be in it- self a great corporation. Wealth Belongs to People. The wealth, which belongs to the peopls at large, is not at present within reach. Therefore, it is In some measure already in the industries; but it is there as loaned capital, and the men who have borrowed it, and t only men whg can in the future borrow it, are men largely interested in the present consolidations. Indeed, the real monopoly behind the present consolidation is the monopoly of convertible capital, Give security to the people In the matter of in- estments made by themselves directly as individuals and this monopoly will disap- pear and competition be restored to its natural field from which to recruit and or- ganize its financial forces. But though beyond all measure desirable competition should not be made the main purpose of trust legislation. Nelther must the true friends of industrial liberty be al- lowed to jostle us off the solid ground on which we should plant ourselves. The re- natlonalization of our industries is the chief concern of the hour, and industrial liberty, popular proprietorship, is the true indus’ trial nationalization. It should be made the affair of every friend of Industrial liberty and of every be- liever in the institution of property. It who loves his country, not sordidly or out of selfish gratitude, but for the ideals and cpportunities that always have been asso- clated with it.
