PARIS, Jan. 4. —(New York World Cable- gram—Special Telegram.)—The two bronze statues ordered by Charles Schwab for his new mansion in Riverside drive, New York, were shown in their clay model form to the correspondent of the World today by Jean Leon Gerome, the celebrated French sculp- tor. The two bronzes are to cost about $150,000 and are to, in & way, symbolize, as nearly as possible, Mr. Schwab's life and the two principal factors in the industry to which his career has been devoted, the arti- san and the metal in which he works. One statue represents labor and is a splendid figure of a workman in lifelike at- titude, brawny and muscular. He looks the perfect type of manhood, and, as he stands with the implements of his trade around him, is fittingly emblematic of the industry Mr. Schwab wishes to be depicted. The other figure symbolizes the science of metallurgy and is a graclous female figure, draped and wearing a laurel wreath. She stands In contemplative mood and forms a striking contrast to the energy of the com- panion statue. M. Gerome exhibited articles, photographs and documents sent to him from Pittsburg by the orders of Mr. Schwab to assist him in bis designs. Among the charactertistio accessories are a pair of shoes such as are worn by the steel workmen, and there are also & shirt and pair of trousers that have done duty on the body of a real son of toil. Maurice Herbert of New York, the archi- tect for Mr. Schwab's new hcu artists from New York to Pittsburg to se- cure photographs, eketches, clothing and other things for the use of the French sculptor and these have been of immense advantage to him in securing truthful por- traiture. When Mr. Schwab passed through Paris on his way to the Riveria he and Mrs. Schwab visited the studio of M. Gerome in the Boulevard Chechy and made a careful study of the work shown by the mod Mr. Schwab told M. Gerome that he was entirely satisfied with the seulptor's con- ception of the figures and directed him to proceed with the casting In bronze. Mr. and Mrs. Schwab were accompanied on thelr visit to the studio by an interpreter, for, although the steel king understands French well, he hesitates in speaking it. The two statues will measure seven feet in helght and will be supported on huge marble pedestals. They will be placed in the art gallery, which will be located in the northeastern corner of the mansion. Ths bronzes will be cast in Franae and will not be finished for three week The pedestals will be made in the United States, as Mr. Schwab believes in patroniz- ing the industries and arts of his mative country whenever possible. As soon as M. Gerome has finished the two statues he will- begin work upon & group designed for the grand hall of the Schwab mansion. All of the statuary will be sent in one shipment and will not arrive on the other side until about November 1, 1903. It is understood that Mr. Schwab pro- poses to eat his next Christmas dinner in bis new house. Don't fool witn & cold; no one can tell what the end may be. Pneumonia, catarrh, chronic bronchitis and consumption invar- fably result from neglected colds. Nothing can be compared with Chamberlain's Cough Remedy as a quick cure for colds and | fuenza and by its use these diseases may be avolded.
