Until lust yewr the railronds in that inxisted upon being supplied with screenedl lump coal and there was comse~ quently & great amount of steam coal on the market. This stock imcreased faster than it cowld be used and a shortage of steam coal was considered beyond the pos- | sibilitles. About a year ago the 'Frisco Tallroad started to experiment with coal as it came from the mines, unscreened. At the redquced price made by the miners it was found that the mine run coal was cheaper than the screened and other roads | ‘began to use it. ~ With the dificulty in secur- ing fuel which all roads have experienced in the last slx months, other roads have used mine run coal, so that practically the full output of the mines could have been #old as mine run. The result is that the output of steam coal has decreased to such & degree that it i3 now scarce and the out- put is limited almost exclusively to the product which is screened for domestic use. ‘The local stock of soft coal for domestic use is as large as the dealers desire and there {s sald to be little danger of a short- #ge In this line this winter, What They Demand. SILK SKIRT BABY IS JOYCE'S Infant Goes te Child Saviag Institute and Father Gees to JalL In the police court yesterday morning C. Twenty-seventh street crossing a delivery- man from a grocery store at Sixteenth and Corby drove onto Parker street. There was little light and he did not appear to notice the coming sled until it was very pear. Then, in his surprise, he Hhalt checked his team, which caused Molander to steer his sled to pass in front of the rig. At the same instant the driver. recovering himself, decided the best thing to do was to whip up and get out.of the way entirely. Accordingly he lashed the horses and they eprang forward, just in time to bring the wagon directly in front of the sled as it was then headed. County Commissioner Henry Ostrom, who chanced to be a witness of the accident, sald: ‘When that driver whipped his horses I saw what was bound to happen and actually I felt the hair stand on my head. There were at least a dozen children on the sled and it was going so fast that it couldn’t possibly be stopped nor the chil- dren roll from it in time unless they all rolled at once. I felt as certain that some of them would be killed as I ever feit of anything {n my life, and as I supposed at the time that a boy of my own was in the party I came nearer praying than I have for some time. “In less time than it takes to tell it the crash came. The sled struck the rear wheels of the wagon, and instantly every- thing and everybody was in the air in a black tumbling mass. I ran to the spot and found the children scattered about in a circle, some of them several feet from the place of the collision. Both rear wheels of the wagon had been torn completely off, the vehicle had beem overturned asd the driver given quite an serial journey. “Every child, of course, was frightened, but when we began ‘sortiug them over we tound nome very seriously (njured except ypung Molander. ing, and there were two holes (n his left side, made apparently by contact with something sharp—perhaps the end of a wheel spoke. 1 got Dr. Impey and we_took bid bome.
