A strange contrast is offered by the oldest and the newest locomotive in the world, says the New York Times. The former, buflt by Stephenson in 1522, is now, after elghty years' continuous service, still work Ing, hauling trucks at Hetton in England. The principal dimensions of this *old timer" are: Diameter of the cylinders, 10% inches; piston stroke, 24 inches; dla- meter of the wheels, 3 feet. The welght of the engine is fifteen tons, and it has a haulage capacity of about 120 tons at & spoed of ten miles an hour on a fairly level track. Its general .design (excepting the cab) remains as originally constructed, while some parts, notably the steam dome, are actually portions of the engine as con- structed In 1822. After this long and faithful service it 1s not surprising to learn that the engine is at last becoming unequal to the ever-in- creasing demands made upon it, and the directors of the Hetton colllery, therefore, shortly intend to withdraw the relie from Hetton, and it will {n the course of a few weeks find a permanent “resting place” at the Durbam College of Sclence, Newcastl on-Tyne, where it will be preserved to this and future gencrations as a worthy example of the earliest period of locomotive engl- neering. Stephenson's “No. 1 Locomotion,” * bullt for the openipng of the Stockton & Darlington raflway in 1825, continued work- Ing on “the first public rallway” until 1850, when it passed into the hwands of Messrs. Peasé & Parfners, by whom it was used for colliery purposes until 1857, at which time it was placed on & pedestal for exhibitiom at Darlington Statlon, where it is to be seen today. The newest locomotive is the New York Central company’s new tandem compound, No. 2899, bullt recently at the Schenectady Locomotive works. A few days ago it took a train of 108 loaded cars from DeWitt to Albany in eleven hours. The 108 cars were loaded with 4,500 tons of treight. This is the greatest tonnage ever moved by a single locomotive on any rallroad in the world. Some idea of the size of the load can be gathered when it is realized that 9,000,000 pounds of freight were moved. The engine was {n charge of Philip Hber- hardt of Albany. Later the same locomo- tive drew 100 cars over the division. In the 100 cars there were 4,200 tons. The hauling capacity of the locomottve is enormous. It drew fifty 1oaded cars up the Schenectady hill without assistance, an un- heard of feat among Central enginemen. The increased power of the monster 1s gained by the use of eteam four times, that is, one compound cylinder placed ahead of the other, hence its name “tandem come pound.” —_—_— COWS ATE DYNAMITE, an Explosion and & ower of Meat. y Thirteen cows, the property of Claude Peters, a dairyman near Martinsburg, were destroyed recently by attempting to eat dypamite, reports the Philadelphia North American. The detonation could he heard for a mile in every direction. The cows were blown many feet into the air, and got & single one of the herd escape The accident is one of the strapgest on record’ It has long been told by the comio ' supplement men that goats of either gender are imbued with a wonderful penchant for munching at everything they bappen across from grass to Herlem flannele, but cows bave not before been charged with a sim- fler desire to feed on anything not tended to richen thelr milk supply. The cattle which were killed on the Peters land were all registered Holsteins of the purest breeding. They were very valuable. From statements made by thelr owner they deliberately courted death. For some time past a crew of workmen bave been engaged in advancing a telephone line along the roadway. A shed was erected on a bit of land belonging to Peters and in this dypnamite was stored. The dynamiee was used for blasting purposes. That afternoon the cows were apparently contentedly munching the pasture grass, when they oFserved the powder shed. They all journeyed to it and found the door was open. On the floor near the door was & box filled with sticks of dynamite. This wi upset so that the dynamite rolled out on the grass, and instantly eeveral of the cows started an investigation. It 18 not known how mapy of the cows se- cured sticks of the explosive, but when they began gnawing at it, the friction caused an explosion and in an instant the air in the immediate vicinity was filled with particl of flylng cows. The workmen In the tronches ran for shelter, not knowing what bhad happened and from many adjoining properties men came running teo make an inevetigation. Peters went out to ascertain the trouble and missed his cows. When he approached the tool shed be found the ground littered with boofs and other evidences of the aln- mals, but no life, and tken he knew whero they had gone, and the milking was nut done that night.
