STARTING UP THE DEADWOOD STANDARD Golden Orest in Gtrawberry Gulch Prepa 16 Hrect a Mill to Treat Not Rich Emough to Ship, DEADWOOD, 8. D., Aug. 8.—(Speclal.)— The Spearfish Mining company has sent down another cleanup from Johnson gulch. Last month there were 4,500 tons of ore fun through the mill in Johnson guleh, About six miles southwest of this eity, which averaged something better than §¢ & ton, or & total of $35,000 for the month. The plant of the comphny, a dry crushing ¢yanide, was run at fts full capscity, 306 fons & day, but a small portion of the time, but the coming month it is expscted to work a night and ddy shift In the mill and keep it golng constantly, so that 6,000 tons will be treated in the month, J. K. Vanatter, the vies presidont of the com- Py, arrived last week and is now at the mines, and befote he left the city he stated that he intended to increass the force of miners and mill men at once, and run the plant Wp to its limit. The company has & mountain of ore exposed, and It ia one of the best cyaniding propositions in the Biack Hills, while its gold is so pure that it hardly needs refining after the ocleanup bas been retorted. In the same vicinity is the Deadwood- Btaridard cyanide plant of 200 tons datly capacity. This is one of the best plants that has been erected in the Black Hills, and on ground which is considered the equal of any In the Ragged Top Mistrict an.a eyaniding proposition, but for some reason or other it has been idle for about three months, after having made several good 8, the ore averaging as good as any in the district. O. M. Brown, the superin- tendent of the company, arrived from Dwn- ver last week, and before leaving for the mines, stated that he would start the mill za | UP 88 Boon as he reached there. During the time ‘that the mill has beon idle a. &vod force of mien has been ke, employed de- veloping the kaown ore bodies and pros- pecting for others, so the property is in #o0od shape to produce ore, and those me- quainted with it can see 20 resson {4 up agatn. At the last meeting of the directors of the company, held in Deadwood about a menth ago, the erection of this mill was decided on, as the company had been for sometime taking out & good quality of ore, which, while it would pay well to treat on the ground, Wwould not give a profit suMclent to war- rant haullng over & hard trail to the SRSESE, The-new pisnt will bo 8s stated, 100 tona daily u.-nltv. but the power will.be 8o arranged that am | omount of dally treatment can be fn-: creased at any time without the closing down of the mill uu‘“.:-h“‘l: operation. At the present time the company is run- ml-nuwfimnh-h.. to connect shatts which have beem sunk along its strike in several places, and as ;lcvmumllmnu‘lnhq". cumulating on ‘the dumps & large smount of ore.
