AT MONMOUTH PARK SCHOOL Effort te Purchase More Greund for Bite Starts Debate. COMMITTEE IS AGAINST THE PROPOSITION Chalrman Stubbendorf Says that the Ground s Net Ne Price Asked by Pr Holder is Too N The proposition to purchase the fve lots lying immediately south of the pres- ent site of the Monmouth Park school house promises to create considerable friction at the next meeting of the Board of Education. The board owns five lote At the present site and when it was de- termined to build an elght-room house on that site ome of the members pro- posed adding to the grounds the five lots adjoining. The present tract is 126 by 260 feet and the proposed addition }s the same size, with an alley of twenty feet running between. Should the purchase be made the alley would be closed and the school ground given a frontage of 260 feet. Last Baturday a committee, of which Fred Stubbendorf Is chairman, visited th grounds and decided that the present ground Is large enough for the school. The Peport of the chairman, which has the support of A majority of the rhembers, has been prepared. It recommends t no purchase be made, but that the house be faced east, the front line to be 125 oot west of the east line of the lot. The pproximate size of the new bullding is elghty by eighty feet, and the committee believes that this would leave sufficient playground for the children. ‘4 Price is Too HI The principal re verss to the purcha for the adjoining property, the owner want- ing $2,500, or $500 a lot. W. R. Homan, who 18 a member of the committee, took up the negotiations with the owner, and this was the best price he could dours, o the additional ground and it is understood that at the mext meeting of the board he will Introdidce a minority report providing tor the purchase in spite of the report of the majority of the committes. Theodore Johneon, another member of the committes, is in favor of purchasing the lots if they can be secured for $800 a lot, while Robert Smith is willing to pay as much as $3,000 for them, but will go no higher. Mr. Stubbendorf not only objects to the price, but also to the idea of having & play ground for the school children abut- ting immediately upon a street car lin as this would upon Ames avenue. He say: .| that 1# addition to paying the price Of the ground the board would have to figure upon the grading necessary to put the land in shape before they ¢an ‘estimate the cost to the board, and this will make the'cost pro- hibitive. Defieit is Certaln. “The board is facing a certaln deficit.” be gaid, “and we must not necessarily i cremse it. if the iand were necessary i would not stand on the matter.of & hun- dred dollars more or less, but we do not need it. We can buy land much nearer the center of town for less money, but that is aside from the question, as we do not need the property. A minority report will not prevail, as a majority of the mem of the board will shetain the committee, the members of which have carefully inquired into the conditions.” Pays a Tribute to Schiley. BALTIMORE, Jily 8L—In a letter ao- cepting ,the appojntment of the vice pres- idency of the Schley Triumphal Arch as- sooclation, fecently organized in this city to erect an enduring monument to the admiral, Cardinal Gibbons says ‘Admiral Schley's victory shed glory on our state and I cheertully accept the posi- tion assigned to me, earnestly hoping that the patriotic enterprise will meet with s hearty response from the citisens of Mary- land."” Seasonable Fashions. 4192 Twe Piace Bishop Mv 82, 86 and 40 bust. ‘Woman's two-pléce bishop sleeve, 4193; to be made with or without the fitted ltning— Nothing marks the date of a costume 8o surely as the sleeve If they be correct and up-to-date the entire gown will take on an alr of smartiess otherwise unknown. The stylish model {llustrated is admirable in every way and is well adapted to re- modelling as well as to the making of new waists. The fact that it is cut in two pleces makes it poksible to ude the pattern for cutiing over sleeves of the smaller bishop type with only the addition of such extra materigl as s usually to be found among the left-over pleces. When extra length is needed # can be oarefully pleced on and the fact entirely hidden from view by a judiclous use of trimming. Lace applted over the materfal, embroidery used in the same way and ‘bands of all eorts are in vogue. By trimming the sleeves above the cuff the Decessary seams can be comocealed while ‘an entirely fashionable effect is ob- talned. ‘The sleeve is cut in two pleces, the full upper which drops over the cuff and the narrow under portion. When made of silk, wodl and the llke or of any material that will not require frequent laundering it shoyld be adjusted over the fitted lining that serves to hold the puff ia place but washable fabrice are better and prettier un- Iined, as they give & softer and sem!-trans« parent effect that is exceedingly attractive. The lining s carefully shaped and will be found an excellent foundation for fancy sleeves of any sort.
