SHRUBBERY AROUND PARKS Its Mission is to Shut Out View of Sur- rounding Houses. LANDSCAPE ARTIST ON THE SUBJEC Mrs. MeCrea of Oma sloners Some Tips on Chicago Gives the Mre. A, E. MoCrea, formerly landscape architect of Lincoln park, Chicago, broke the usual monotony of the monthly park board meetings Wednesday afternocon by glving an impromptu talk on '‘Parks and How to Make Them,” and several kindred subjects. The talk was so informal that Mrs. McCrea delivered it sitting, and the commissioners did not hesitate to interrupt her at frequent intervals with questions. “Do you believe, Mrs. McCrea, that shrub- bery should be torn away from around the margin of a park in order that persons in the park may look out and see the beautl- ful residences, or so that people in the residences may look into the park?” asked Mr. Lininger. This question was “loaded,” though Mrs. McOrea didn't know it. Just before she came there had be: spirited discusssion between Mr. Gonden the other bers of the board on this subject, Mr. Gon- den holding that this should be d at Hanscom park, though he wu alone in the position. “No, - indeed, I do not!" answered Mrs. McOrea. “Ome of the first things I did after taking charge at Lincoln park, - cago, was to hi shrubbery placed so - to shut out Clark street, and—" There was a hearty laugh at Mr. Gom- den's expense. It's well enough to open & vista oc- casionally,” she resumed, “but there should be that element of lsolation that iz soul of a park. People go to the park to get away from the hous I would say don't consider the individuals whe live around the park; if you do they will control it, and the first thing you know you'll have no park. We have an example of that at Milwaukee. There a lot of wealthy—"* “How about the shrubbery inside the park?” asked Mr. Lininger, “Would you clear that away?™ *“No, I weuldn't; they'll hunt out thos places anyway to speon In, and you might as well make the places artistio, But there's one thing I would do—I'd clear out those conglomerations of colors in flowers, It's a1l well enough to have an old-fashioned flower garden, but it should be by ftself, Where you have all those flaming flowep beds at Hanmscom . there should be emly goldenglow and evergreens.” Mrs. McCrea, who is a guest at the home of D. V. Sholes, is now landscape archi- tect for several rallroad companies, in- cluding the Milwaukee, Burlington, Rock Island, Duluth & South Shore gnd others. She has submitted a plan to the Burling- ton for the embellishment of its grounds in the vicinity of its station in Omaha.
