WOULD MAKE OLD SOL PUMP FOR FIELDS Bin fn Aba; id Elevator Yh Reecofd of 1des Which Mas Been Developed in Another Form., Bince Bullding Inspector Carter began his crusade against ramshackle structures he has come across many curious afticles tucked away between jolsts or studding, or hidden in cubbyholes or closets, and evi- dently long since forgotten by persons who onte cherished them. Love lotters, tied with faded ribbon are turned up by the bale. Rusty cutlery, dimantled firearms and dog-eared books make up the bulk of this flotsam of the rookeries, though occaston- ally he chances upon such articles of in- trinsic value as old coins and once a dust- covered mantel ylelded a certificate of di- vorce. It is possible that the certificate was the sequel of the love letters, though this cannot be proved, as Mr. Carter does not keep & collection. Saturday he found something fn & bih of the old elevator at Eleventh ptreet and Unfon Pacific tracks that Interests him al- most as much as would a pile of human bones. or a chart showing the location of a cached treasure. It is a drawing seription of a device for utilizing t! rays in operating a pump for frrigation purposes. Buch a device is already In use, but the machine which is now trrigating the orange groves of southern Callfornia differs very materially from that portrayed in the draw- ny Moreover, the drawings must have been made long before the California ma- chine was built, or perhaps ever thought of. They are mildewed, faded and in some places rotten with age. Thrust away in & uiche of the great gully-like bin, a quan- tity of dlifterent kinds of grain rattled out of the shects as they were removed, show- ing that they must have beem there for a long time before the elevator was aban- doned, which was nearly ten years ago. Principle of the Machin The California sun pump utilizes the principle of reflected heat, mirrors being used to converge the rays upon a bofler. This machine uses double convex lenses instead of mirrors, and refracts the heat instead of reflecting it. If the drawings are any criterfon the machine contemplated by the unknown inventor is much more compact, concise and simple than the ome now in use. The principal feature of it is three su- perposed convex lenses. The lower one Is immovably fixed a few feet abave the boller, upon which it focuses the sun's rays; the two upper ones are fitted with bearings which permit them to follow the sun in fits flight across the heavens,'a movement which, on the part of the len: is accomplished automatically, without use of clockwork. Hach of the top len gathers the rays and bends them upon the lens beneath, but does not focus them, s the discs are placed too close together to admit of that—a precaution taken, ©po doubt, to prevent the melting of the glass. The device for keeping the top lens faced toward the sun is ingenious. The bearings in which 1t swings are fitted with soft lead bars about the size of lead penclls, which project horizontally into the shaft. The moment the rays touch a side of the shaft (a fact which indicates that the top lens is no longer in a correct position in rela- tion to the sun and the lenses hemeath it) a small portion of the lead point is melted mway, the lens resumes its proper plane and the error is corrected. Notation of Imventor, The following notation appears on one of the sheets of drawing paper: Plan of d.vlc. for generating steam for operating a pump for irrigating purposes. ?hould Il:‘a.ulatull in cage of arouth, wnan for weeks no clouds appear and the sun shines continuously. Wlfi save its cost In fuel in a short time “The machine may not work,” id Mr. Carter, “but the principle seems sound, aad 1 belleve it can be made to work. No, I don't think I shall go to the expense of baving a model made, but I'm going to show these drawings to a practical me- chanic I bave in mind and see what he thinks of them.” It the drawings ever bore the name of the inventor it has been obliterated by time. A WELL KNOWN ALBANY MAN Oholera and Diarrhoes Remedy. About elghteen months ago Mr. W. 8, Manning of Albany, N. Y., widely known in trade circles as the representative of the Albany Chemical Co., was suffering from a protracted attack of diarrhoea. “I tried Chamberlain’s Colle, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy,” he says, “and obtalned immediate relief. I cheerfully recommend this medi- cine to those similarly aficted. TOWN WITHOUT POSTOFFICE Postmaster of Spi Valley, South Dakota, Decamps, Taking Ofice f with Him, BIOUX FALLS, 8. D., July 27.—(Special.) ~—For the first time in & quarter of a cen- tury Spring Valley, Turner county, is without & postofice, due to the removal without notice of the government property and the departure of Postmaster Lovett.
