NEW YORK, July 23 —The stock market again demonstrated its absorptive rnwer today and made a various, quite convincing show of strength, notwithstanding the ap- pearance of a reactionary tendency in some of the stocks which attempted to realize by the high price attained and a few cases of positive weakness. The voluma of dealings was again below 1,000,000 shares and the bulk of dealings was congested In a few active stocks. It was obvious, never- , that the bull campaign was still in force and that large and powerful capital- ists were still committed to the long side of the market. Not much attention was pald to the news of the d“t}e which was somewhat meager in Its aring upon values of securities. Trading started in on a basis of about a 10c decline. As the morning advancrd, nowever, it be- came ecvident that there were none too many hoks to meet the demand, and as a resuit trading became more active. To- ward the close prices also improved, and the last sales were probably not much'more than a nickel loer thar yesterduy's gen- eral market. As receipts were rather llght practically everything was out of first hands by the miidie of the forenoon. The bulk of the good hogs sold from §1.35 to $7.40, and from that up to $7.65. The pack- ing grades and lightweight stuff of poor quality sold from §1.30 down. As will be seen from the table of receipts above, the supply so far this week has been heavier than for the same days of last weak, but hardly. equal to the same days of last year. But more noticeable than that s the sudden drop In prices. At the close of last week the average price of hogs was a fraction better than $7.66, so that for the three days there has been a decline of 30c to 36c. Representative sales: RRRRRNESRRBRRRURIE, i sssuuRERs = eSS ENNNNRRRRERRRRRRRREEE 1 na 10 40 150 SHEEP—There was another fairiy liberal supply of. ‘sheep and lambs here today, which makes the receipts for the first half of the week considerably heavier than for the same days of last week, and there is also a gain over the same days of last year. ‘There were none too many, however, to meet the requirements of local packers, as is shown by the fact that active and steady to strong market experienced. Buyers were all out early and it only took them a short time to buy up every- thing offered that was at all good. It was noticeable, however, that the prices pid were a little uneven, as some sales looksd considerably higher than others. As a gen- cral thing, though, the market could oe quoted steady to strong and active, Ewes and wethers mixed sold as high as $.00 and $4.05, and the wethers that sold yester- day at $4.15 brought the same price today. There were some Idaho lambs offered that brought as high as $6.00. Feeders continued in gooddemand and could be quoted active and fillly steady. Recelpts, however, were light.
