The Introduction of the mew per dlem system of charging and collecting for freight car use by s:veral western roads is causing an endlese amount of trouble for the accounting departments of the Union Pacific and_ Burlingtor. The eystem went into effect Tuesday and since that time the cleriea *+ have been literally “covered up” with wor Comp.icatiocs of the new system, work of bringing about the traneition from the old to the new and a hundred other little things which never were thought of when the lnnovation was devised, are daily lcoming up to vex and annoy. But one of the most grievous hardships which the clerks of the Unfon Pacific have yet en- countered ia that as a result of the instaila- tion of this system many, if not all of them, will be deprived of their annuai va- eation, or a part of It at least, someathing they have not missed for years. As the force of clerks is large and only a few can be spared at a time the period for vaca- tions has arrived and not a few have al- ready learned to their sorrow that they must forego the pleasure of all or part of their ten-day recreation, Another very serious and more subs tial complaint arlsing from this new method is that the rafiroads have been de- ceived in expecting to get a simpler method of charging and coilecting theso freight rentals. Instead. it appears far more com- plicated and besides will necessitate the in- creass of the office force. Provisions are already being made for additions to the clerical departments. To offset these features, roads still hold that the innovation will prove profitable in that it will afford larger saving in the prevention of delays in returning cars, and they say that this will more than compensate for the minor cost of extra clerk hire. Speetal Ak Some of the local passenger officlals who attended the meeting of the Western Pas- senger association in Chicago returned to tho elty yesterday morning. One of the traneactions of the meeting was the ap- proval of a one-fare rate made by the Omaha lines to people wishing to attend the Ak- BSar-Ben initiatory meetings Monday nights. This rate is applied to all places within a however, the ~Ben Rate. radius of seventy-five miles of Omaha, east | and west, and the return limit fs fixed at 11 o'clock or later on the night on which the party reaches Omaha or the mext morning if the line on which he makes the trip does not have a train out that night. The concession is on the grounds that Ak-Sar-Ben is organized to promote the interests of the fall festivities in Omaha. About Ressigue's Resignation. Later reports from Topeka indlcate that the enforced resignation of C. F. Ressigue as superintendent of the eastern division of the Santa Fe was due to differences be- tween Mr. Ressigue and Third Vice Presi- dent Kendrick, head of the operating de- partment of the system. It seems that the XKendrick policy has never been in line with Ressigue's ideas and the result is the sub- ordinate officla] had to go. This is a sort of “‘hail and farewell” visit of the Wild West. It has taken some seventeen or eighteen years | to get here, is going next season to Europe to be gone two or three years, and s hardly lkely to last long enough to get back here, since its duration is necesearily limited to the lives of its men.
