Yosterdny was the last day for the pay~ ment of real and personal taxes for 1902 be- fore they become dellnquent, and a glance inside the quarters of City Treasurer Hen- nings any time during the day made It plain that the people were fully cognizant of the fact. From § o'clock in the morning till late in the afternoon the rush was con- tinual, keeping half a score of clerks on the jump. There was some $400,000 in all yet to come in, and it seemed as though the people were trying to pay the whole thing at once. The office was opened unusually early in the morning, to accommodate the early but the wide hall outside was packed solid at 7:30, and at 10 o'clock it was impossible to open the main door of the office from the outside, hecauss of the | crush of people against it on the inaid City Treasurer Hennings says he N seen many such runs, but that this is the largest. People have a tendemey to walt till near the limit of time, anyway, it doesn’t cost anything. But the rainy weather last Friday and Saturday kept them away then, and Tuesday morning is the time when it begins to cost them money at the rate of 1 per cent month, if they haven’t paid up, 8o that meant a flood of several thousand people yesterday. One thing that made the total sums utstand- ing %0 large was that many of the corpor- ations and tigger taxpayers had left their settlement till the LARGE TALK FOR SMALL SUMS Ann nent Equalizers Complain that People with Trivial Matters Are Too Conversation: A taxpayer, descended from members of one of the tribes that wero not lost, oceu- pled thirty minutes of the time of the County Board of Fqualization yesterday in an effort to obtaln a redustion in the assessed valuation of his property. The reduction was refused and the man called the declination an outrage. It would have resulted In reducing the amount of his taxes just 12 cents. Similar instances are not infrequent, and the commissioners are losing patience. They say that hereafter people with complaints that fnvolve only trivial amounts must talk fast and quit when they have sald what is essentlal. The old excuse of complaining because of the “principle of the thing' will suffice no longer. The commissioners wish to get through Thursday and will waste no more time, they say. Seasonable Fashions. 8174 Mente Carlo Coat, 32 to-40 bust. ‘Woman's Monte Carlo Coat, 4174—Monte Carlo coats are in the helght of style and are eminently comfortable, as well as smart. This excellent model is adapted to taffeta, pongee, etamine, linen and all the season' fabrics, but as shown is of black taffeta, with a collar of heavy twine-colored lace over one of silk, and & finish of straps stitched with silk. The coat is semi-fitted and includes shoulder, under-arm and center back seams that give a curve which 1s exceedingly be- coming. The sleeves are in bell-shape and are opened at the back for a few inches from the edge. The neck is finished with a narrow, shaped collar that crosses at the center front and to which are attached the double, flat cape cape collars that fla: apart at the center back. Over the seams and edges are applied straps of this ma- terial and the coat is closed by means of buttons and loops, but the straps can be omitted and the edges simply stitched and the closing can be made invisibly by means of a fly, it preferred. To cut this coat in the medium size 6% yards of material 21 inches wide, 6% yards 27 Inches wide, 2% yards 44 inches wide or 2% yards 50 inches wide will be required. The pattern, 4174, is cut in sizes for 33, 84, 36, 38 and 40-inch bust measure. For the accommodation of The Bee read- ers, these patterns, which usually retail at trom 25 to 50 cents, will be furnished at & nominal price, 10 cents, which covers all expense. In order to get any pattern em- close 10 cents, give number and name of pattern wanted and bust measure. STEAMBOATS.
