Havens of the Omaha party which went to the Nez Perces Indian res- ervation in Idaho, returned yesterday morn- ing. The remainder of the party will ar- rive on later trains The Omahans were very successful in se- suring claims on the reservation, which was opened for settlement last week. They left here in a specia) car to Billings, Mont., sver the Burlington, and from there to| Drofino, 1daho, where they took horses and | wagons for the trip of twenty-five miles | to the reservation. On the opening day | sach man secured 160 acres of land, more | or less, 8o that the entire party will con- | trol about 5,750 acres of the best land on the reservation “Each man thinks he has the best claim.” sald Clement Chase, “but the fact is that there is little to choose between them, for while some lle closer to the creek others bave the heaviest timber. As a whole the Jand is the best timbered I ever saw. We entered a forest of white and yellow pine, pamarack and spruce as thick as it is pos- dble for trees to grow. We camped one pight in the forest and the next day lo- gated our land. Then we went to Lewls- ton, Idaho, where we were received by the eitizens with a hearty welcome. The set- tlers in that part of the country have Heveloped the land remarkably. Large or- chards now stand where sage brush cnly grew five years ago and the Omaha party made the best of its opportunity to eat cherrles. Clarkston, Wash., just across the river from Lewliston, is a thriving town and together they preserve the names of the ploneer explorers of that cou Lewiston we went down the € 1o Riparia, where we took the Oregon Short Line to Ogden. Several members of the party stopped at Salt Lake for a day or two and will be home later.” Will Prove Up In F The party, after having entered the land, will have to return to Lewiston in the fall to prove up on the claims and pay for them under the terms of the timter claim entry, after which deeds to the land will be lssusd by the government.
