‘THE OMAHA SUNDAY BEE. ESTABLISHED JUNE l 1871. OMAHA, L [-IA\DE \'SSTOCK GETS SOAKED RBain Doss $25,000 Damage to Goods in Big Devartment Store, DRAIN SPOUTS CLOG DURING DOWNPOUR Stockroom on Top Floor Turned Into Lake by Water Which Gains Admission Through the Roof. Fully $26,000 damage from water was sus- tained Hayden Bros.’ store during the fierce rain of Thursday night. Loose pleces of board which had been left on the flat roof were washed by the flood Into the es- capes to the water spouts, which were thus quickly clogged. Having no other means of exit the water beat back under the roof from the escapes at the edges, going In be- tween the roof and the celling next it, and 1t soon broke through the plastering, flood- ing the top floor inches deep. The top floor is the stock room and the trouble occurred directly over that portion fronting on Sixteenth street given over to shoes and notions and furnishings. Damage aggregating easily $15,000 was done here, @s immense new stocks had just been re- celved and almost everything was wet down, cardboard boxes being soaked to a pulp. Below the stock room on the third floor ds the carpet and drapery department, and here, too, great damage was done. All the fine oriental stuffs and roll after roll of carpeting was wetted. There the water stopped, not getting through the wecond floor. The trouble was discovered soom after the pelting rain began late in the after- noon, and at 6:45 fifty men were working frantically to check the damage. Thirty huge tubs and Afty buckets and scoop- shovels were hurried to the stock room, ‘where the water was acooped from the floor and thrown from the windows by tub- fuls. Meanwhile other men were cover- 1ng the stacks of goods with olicloth sheets, and when most of the water had been taken from the floor the rest was sopped up with mops and sponges. When this work was done the force was reduced, but five men worked all night at the task. Friday morning a score or so of employes was at work segregating the soaked goods.- Yards and yaras of laces, ribbons and scores of boxes of bandker- chiefs and underwear, besides art goods and tollet articles and other things innu- merable were in the list. The roof itself did not leak, as it was fully repaired two months ago, and the roofers assert that at the time they re- moved every plece of wood and foreign matter up there, so they are not to blame. Proprietors of the store, therefore, think tnat wiring crews of some of the varlous electric connection concerns left thelr sawed ends lylng around on the gravel, and a damage suit may result, if the fault can be placed. Representatives of the Nebraska Tele- phone company visited the place yester- @ay and showed theat they bad no wires acrosy that part of the roof, and so would mever have cause to put workmen there.
