Frye of Malne s an ardent lover of the sport of fishing. In the far recesses of the Penobscot woods, re- lates the Saturday Evening Post, he bullt years ago & picturesque hermitage at the bead of a chain of mountaln lak and thither he travels annually and establishes himself, spending his vacation in fishing. Once, after his return trom his summer's outing, he met the celebrated naturalist, Agassiz. Glowingly Senator Frye described his experiences. “Among my triumphs,” sald he, “was the capture of a speckled trout that welghed fully elght pounds.” Dr. Agassiz smiled and sald: “Reserve that for the credulous and convivial circles of rod and reel celebrants, but spare the feelings of a sober sclentist.” “This is not & campaign whopper I'm telling; I weighed that trout carefully and it was an elght-pounder “My dear Mr. Frye/'' remonstrated Dr, Agassiz, permit me to inform you that the salvalinus fontinalls never attains that ex- traordinary welght. The creature you caught could not have been & speckled trout. All the authorities on Ichthyelogy would disprove your claim.” “All T can say to that,” replied Senator Frye, “is that there are, then, bigger fish in Maioe than are dreamed of in your noble #clence. As they parted Mr. Frye added merrily: f you will establish & summer wschool somewhere under the shadows of Mount Katahdin I'll wager ihai it will aot be long before you will have oecasion to alter your textbooks.” The next season found the statesman at his usual avocation in the Malne woods. One day be caught a speckled trout that weighed nine pounds. He packed it in ice and sent it to Dr. Agassiz. A few days later he tramped to the sta- tion where he recelved his mall and tele- grams. One of the latter was an epigram« matic message from the great sclenmtist, which Benator Frye cherishes to this day, It read: ““The science of a lifetime kicked to death by & fact, Agassiz.”
