LINCOLN, March 10.—(Special Telegram.) —Calls were issued tonight for meetings of the democratic and populist state central committees in this city the afternoom of March 19. The democratic call asserts that the meeting is for the purpose of consider- ing matters of party interest, but the popu- | 118t call 1s more explicit in that it specifies three subjects for comsideration. The meetings will be held separstely, but com- munication between the two committees will be established by the appointment of conference committees. One of the impor- tant matters to be discussed by the popu- lists is the proposed formation of a state association of populist editors “It has been customary to call our com- mittee together about this time each year, and we are simply following that prece- dent,” sald P. L. Hall, democratic chair- man. “The meeting will enable the man- agers to lay the foundation for the came paign, and the call is 50 worded that the time and place for the conventien may be designated. A conference committee may be appointed to talk over matters with a | 1ike committes of popullets.” | Charles Q. De France, populist chairman, |said: “In my call T have suggested three things—first, the designation of time and | ing of & conference committee; third, con- ulist editors. Will the conference commit- tee ask for fusion® No, that will be un- | necessary. 1 regard fusion a foregone con- clusion. We are not confronted bere by the conditions which prevall in Kansae. | The conterence will probably go mo fur- |ther than to decide that both conventions shall be held simultaneously in the same city. “In addition to the meeting of the popu- 1ist committee, we will have & general party perty workers ssking them to attend.” Street Raflway Disfranchised. The council tonight passed an ordinance disfranchising the Lincoln Street Railway company, which was the predecessor of the Lincoln Traction company. The Traction company’s attorneys say the measure will have no effect. The attorneys for the city insist, however, that it will facilitate the collection of delinquent taxes. State Whist Tourney. Whist experts will gather in Lincoln to- morrow to attend the fourth annual meet- ing of the Nebraska Whist association. Women whist players of the state are in- vited for the first time to attend and enter all contests. A team contest for the Lin- coln challenge trophy, ia which four play- ers from any club in the state may play, and a pair contest, in which any two play- ers may participate, will be held. Trophies will be presented to the winners. CAPTURES HOUSE BREAKER Farmer Lies in Wait and When Marsuder Res Fills Him with Shot. EXETER, Neb., March 10.—(Special)— For more than a year past robberies have occurred on Sundave in houses whose occu- pants were at church. For a leng time the thefts were supposed to be the work of tremps, but as these occurrences did not cease the farmers who were victims of these depredations began & systematic watch. Yesterday morning at the residence of Mr. Jenson, three miles east of here, the family had all gone to church except Mr Jeneon, who concealed himself in the house. He had not remained there long when be saw a young man mamed Charles Bode coming toward the house. Bode tried the doore, but finding them locked, secured a plece of iron and pulled the staple that held the lock on the outside cellar door. When Mr. Jenson heard him in the cellar he secured his shotgun and as young Bode stepped into the room from below he was contronted by the man bebind the gum and commanded to throw up his hands, but instead of doing so he made a dash for the man and gun and seized the gun barrel with both bands. This was an unexpected move to Jenson, but he pulled the trigger of the gun and Bode received the full charge of shot in his leg just below the thigh. Constable Lefler went out and arrested Bode and brought him to town. He is at present under the care of Dr. Stratton.
