The clergy, however, have, as & rule, ignored this fact and have per- sisted in keeping the sex subordinate in all matters relating to church govermment. Rev. Herbert 8. Bigelow Is one member of the clerical profession who seems imolined to do the women justice. In & recent issue of the Pilgrim he writes If we turn to the condition of woman in Christendom we shall find that her progress has been long impeded by false ifeas of her relation to man, and in defense of these ideas the bible has been freely oted. The besetting lust of power. Man )& an egotist. It takes culture a long time to refine that way. Man loves to flatier himselt wi the thought of his superiority. That pride of power is undoubtedly at the bottom of the fact that he Is 50 reluctant to acknowl- edge the equality of the sexes. Pericles thought “‘a woman's chiet glory was to be known neither for good nor evil.” Socrates thanked the gods daily that he was mean, mot & brut and that he wad ‘male, not femal Brasmus prayed tBat sl people might come to read the bible, ven women and Turks." Yot we are becoming civilized, though slowly. REven now, fn some parts of this ublic, women enjoy full voting privilege -l‘t’l men yet it was only a century ago that France gulllotined & woman for daring to assert woman's right to the ballot. It was only twenty-five years ago- that we in America began to think woman worth edu- cating. As & student in the theSlogical seminary I remember the professor eaying of woman's place in the church: “Womeén may sing in prayer meeting and play on thé plano or organ, and If the meeting is not too publie they may offer up prayer.” He forgot to. say that they might also contribute to the preacher's salary. Robert Browning asserted that of (he two it was his wife who had a creative o | gentus, yet to him and not to her England accorded the honor of @ burial in Weat- minster, Our bible is not responsible for this ua- generous treatment of women. The causs is back of the bible, in the nature of man. But there are seripture texts in which this egotism of the male has Intrenched itself. On the woman question Maszini was more orthodox than Psul. He told the young men of Ital: “Love and respect woman. Seek in ber not merely a comfort, but & force, an inspiration, the redoubling of your intellectusl and moral faculties. Cancel from your minds every idea of superiority over her. You have none what- ever.”' Still Keeps it Up. “During & period of poor health some time ago I got a trial bottle of DeWitt' Little Early Risers says Justice of th Peace Adam Bhook of New Lisbon, Ind. “l took them and they did me so much good 1 have used them ever since.” Safe, reliable and gentle, DeWitt's Little Barly Risers neither gripe nor distress, but stim- wiste the Mver and regular asd easy action of the bows
