OMAHA, Jan. 14.—To the Editor of The Bee: In regard to market houses on the streets, everyone knows who has ever been in the eastern citles that the market hous are on the streets and were located there as an experiment, some of them 100 years ago, and have since become nulsance Philadelphla is doing away with fts markets. Other cities are doing the same as fast as ground can be acquired. Is it neceswary that Omaha go backward 100 years and make the same mistakes other clties made? it is the householders who need a market. The ma- Jority of the population of Omaha live west of Twenty-fourih street and for that reason lower Capitol avenue is not a fit place for & market. The right way to do for the benefit of the city 1s to buy a sultable plece of ground with streets surrounding it and bulld & market house. One thing we do not want to adopt Is obsolete types of market houses bullt fitty years ago on the stre We muat alm to be up-to-date and original in our ldeas. there 1s anyone on Capitol avenue who wants to get rid of their prop- erty let them offer it cheap for market house purposes. Yours respecttully, JOHN F. BEHM. ADVICE ON GORDON'S SALARY City Attorney Connell Thinks Judge Ought to Re Pald §2,500 for Last Year, “In my opinion the city should pay Judge Gordon his salary for 1901 at the rate of $2,600 a year without any further litiga- tion,” sald City Attorney Conpell. ‘““The courts held against the city on the 1900 salary and I believe the result would be the me If the supreme court were to give a decision concerning the last year. The city of Omaha will not have to pay Judge Gordon salary for any time fter January 6 of the present year. He is & dead letter now and In my opinion it is best to pay him off for last year lnd brlnl the litigation with him to an end.
