THE _OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY DECEMBER_22 1901 STATE COLLECE GETS CATTLE | Ohioago Steek Yudl Company Lends Them to Towa Institution, DOUD MUST RETURN TO PENITENTIARY Shaw Revokes Parole for Conduct and Govern Alleged Disorderly Convict Must Serve Remaining Five Years of Sentence. (From a Staff Correspondent.) DES MOINES, Dec. 21.—(Spectal)—The trustees of the lowa State college in their meeting at Ames entered into a contract with the Unloa Btock Yards company of Chicago by which the college experiment station may enter upon the work of con- ducting exporfments in live stock without any great expenditure by the state or any risk. The experiment work of the station has heretofore been largely confined to ex- periments with soil products and the work of experimenting with live stock has not been entered upon because of the great cost of herds of fancy cattle and other animals. Now the Union Stock yards of Chicago ofter to lend to the experiment station fitty head of live stock, all of pure breed, to be used for experiment work. The stock fs 1o be returned to the company at the pleas- ure of the college, or may be purchased by the college. In this way the collegs will snter upon experimental work in live stock The ecollege authorities, and particularly Prot. Curtiss of the live stock department, rogard this as the most important innova- tion of the collego in recent years and as marking a great step forward. The move- ment is the direct outgrowth of the excel- ent showing made this year at the Chicago live stock show by the college students trom Ames and their success in winniog the Epoor trophy. State Board Awards Contracts. The States Board of Coutrol awarded & number of contracts for supplies, including weat, tobacco, groceries, vinegar and pick- \es, spices, crackers and cookies, pharma: ceuticals, drugs and dispensary supplies, wnd other articles that are purchased by the quarter. The beet and pork contracts ne will amount to $35,000 and Swift and Company of South Omaba got the big end of the contract. The groceries were dividea among seven firms. The Cedar Rapide Re- publican Publishing company received a special contract for blank books and sup- plies that will amount to about $600, and (ko Dubuque Telegraph-Herald was awarded the contract for printing the quarterly bul- letin during 1902 Governor Revokes Parole. Governor Shaw revoked the parole of Milo Doud ot Marshall county and he was today taken to the penitentiary at Fort Madison to serve five years more. He was con- victed of brutally assaulting an old couple Iiving in the country and robbing their home and on this conviction was sentenced to seventeen years in the penitentiary. Gov- ernor Drake paroled Doud in 1897 and he roturned to his home and family, near the sceno of his crime. He bas lived quietly there until recently, when he got into an altercation with neighbors and has proved himself disagreeahle. For this and other reasons he 1y sent back to serve five years more. Estimate on Cou 1t is expected contracts will be signed ‘n & few days for the construction of & new courthouse at Des Moines. The awards were made, but as they wers made to two difterent bldders there has been some diffi- culty inducing the bidders to sign the con- tracts. As there are a number of responsi- ble bidders the contracts will be signed soon. The stone and mason work on the courthouse will cost about $230,000. Becomes 0ld Line Company. Pl The American Life Insurance company of this city, which has been operated several yoars as a stipulated premium company, was today granted a charter to do business as an old-line life insurance company. Court Disposes of Numerous Cases. The supreme court today filed opinions in a number of comparatively unimportant cases. In a Taylor county case the court sent back for retrial a contested election controversy Involving the office of county superintendent. It appears that the con- test was made on the entire county. It was afterward admitted by the contestant that the returns from one precinct had not been kept so0 that they would be admitted as evidence. The lower court therefore dis- missed the entire proceedinge. The su- preme court says that the error in one pre- cinct should not have prevented a recount in the rest of the county. In the Clinton county case of Lund agalnst Tyler the plaintiff had recovered damages for injuring defendant in a fist fight and the defendant bad pleaded that the plaintift bad challenged him to a fignt and abused him. The court holds that the whole thing was @ breach of the law and it matters not that, the plaintiff instigated the fight. A rave was glven in the Wright county case of the State agalnst Mrs. Honry Lugar on the ground that one of the witnesses against the defendant was not sworn before testifylng and the fact was not discovered until after the trial. The court says this was a fatal error in the trial. The record of opinions filed Is as follows Henry Lund against He , appo lant; Clinton county; udge, af- rmed. John H.
