REVIVING AN OLD PROJECT| | J. B MaoOsll Werking on Road from Siowx | ity to the Beuthwest. ELEVEN-YEAR-OLD SURVEY THE BASIS | Increase in Shop Foree nt Cheyenne nd Other Points 6n Unlon Pacific While Omnha Are Shops 1ding. 3. H. MacColl of Lexington has become a | rallroad promoter. He has fallen heir to the rights and grants of the surveys made for the Sloux City & Southwestern road by the Hitcheock engincering party in 1801 and j& now trying to breathe life into the project. Recently he was in Sfoux City interviewing bankers and capitalists and endeavoring to enlist thelr ald in the en- | terprise The line as surveyed opposite Sloux City, on the north side of | the Pacific Short Line, crosses this road at Plainview and runs by way of Broken Bow | to Lexington on the Unlon Pacific, crossing the Elkhorn at Neligh. The intentlon of the original promoters was to form a con mection between the Great Northern and | the Union Pacific. Now, instead of a Unfon Pacific connection, which is considered im practicable under conditions, Mr. MacColl is seeking to interest capital in a Great Northern-Burlington connection | The new plan is to use the old survey | until the Burlington's line to Billings and | the northwest s reached at some point yet | to be de mined, between Grand Island and Broken Bow. A railroad built upon | this survey would run through a fertile por- | tion of Nebraska, parts of which have poor raflroad facilities. However easy to see In what way be of any particu anything outsl leaves Covington, very it fs not this road would | r benefie to anybody or | of City. 1t the Great Northern and the Burlington desire a connection 1t app much more reason able for an extension of the Pacific Short | Line, which Is owned by the Great North ern, to be bullt to the Burlington's line to Billings, as this could be done much easfer and with less expense. ux Increase in Cheyenne Shop Force, | A Cheyenne correspondent has learned from “a reliable source” that the force In the Unlon Pacific shops at that point is to bo increased to 1,000 men before spring. At present 732 men are employed. Headquar- ters officlale refuse to discuss the matter, but it fe considered probabte that the shop forces at all division points, including Grand Island, North Platte and Cheyenne will be increased to some extent during the period of construction of the new Omaha shops. When the new shops are completed, however, it will be the policy of the depart- ment of motive power and machinery to make all Important repairs and do all con- struction work here, leaving nothing but road repairs for the other shops to do. The Carbon County Wool Growers' asso- olation, with headquarters at Rawlins, Wyo., which recently closed a contract with the land department of the Union Pacific for the use of 480,000 acres of raflroad land in the Red desert for next year, denled a rumor that this lease was made for the pur- pose of shutting out western Wyoming and Utah sheep from the desert. Officers of the asaoclatlon say that the story is absurd, as | the tract they leased is a small fraction of | the area of the desert The Burlington fs going to turn over a | now leaf on January 1 and resolve that its | stations must be kept in neater shape. | Every statlon agent must see to it that all | wall decorations, such as orders, circulare, posters and the like, are taken down and the new ones that are to be lssued will be framed. A general cleaning day s to be in- augurated and the dawning of the New | neat and bright as new. | Omaha | tund at the | program | Paulvon, | fast trains of the Union Pacific reach San | stockholders® HAYDE OPENING SALE TONIGHT.
