Admiral Smith | entered the navy in October of 1861 and | two months later Mr. Sargent entered the | eervice, boys Go to Sea Together, They were both assigned to duty on the Kearsarge and served four years on the famous old boat that did such noble service. Admiral Smith was paymaster on the boat and Mr. Sargent was his nssistant. At the of the ar Admiral Smith remained | in the service and was soon promoted to | pay director and was finally advanced to an admiralship. He ls 64 years of age and 15 no longer in active service, | During the last two years Admiral Smith has spent most of his time in Europe. He | was dangerously sick In Berlin for several | months, but rallied and has fully recovered | his health. It has heen twelve years since Admiral Smith and Mr. Sargent last met They are the only two officers now living who were on the Kearsarge during its fa- mous engagement oft the coast of France with the conferedate ship, Alabama “We men who went through the famous fight near Cherbourg will never forget each | other,” sald Admiral “That fight was more like a duel than a naval battle. The two ships were of practically the same slze and the same equipment here was no long distance tighting. The two mon- sters approached each other like mad bulls and the struggle was flerce as they followed | each other around in a circle and dealt tell- | 10g blows. It was a fight for blood. There was no jockeying and retreating. The bat- tle continued until the Alabama had dealt its last blow and its crew was compelled o leave the sinking hull.” PRAIRIE CHICKEN Sportsmen Dealers Preparing the Law. SEASON and in Game to erve Today 1t will be lawful to kill prairie chickens for thirty days and several Omaha &portsmen are making ready for a campaign in the fleld, the majority of them expect- ing to go out the first of next week. There Is considerable question as to some of the terms of the law and the dealers in game are particularly wary and will not make contracts for the delivery of game until they have recelved legal opinions upon the law The law permits a dealer to have not more than fifty birds at any one time and this provision is probably to be the means of an evasion of the law, as it 1s sald employes of the houses will each buy fifty birds, thus permitting the dealer to control as many birls as fifty times the number of persons he has to purchase them. This plan has been suggested to one Omaha dealer, who refused to be enticed into the scheme, saying that he would ob- serve the law untll it was shown that its terms were not enforceable Persons going into the western counties to hunt game are being notified of the necessity of providing themselves with licenses to shoot, as unless they have such licenses the railroad companies are not permitted to recelve game for shipment from them and they are liable to fine or mprisonment in case they are found kill- ing birds. These licenses can be procured from any county clerk where the applicant 18 known, and for residents of the state of Nebraska they cost $1. For residents of other states the license fee fs $10. The licenge 18 good for twelve months. Tt is not transferable. Reports from the west- ern counties are to the effect that prarie chickens are plentiful, but that on account of the late opening of the shooting season they are strong and wary, making it ex tremely dificult to secure good bags.
