All that remained of the street fair last night was gaunt booths, standing out upon the strects, alons, without decorations and wholly unoccupied. All day Saturday the ed and by Saturday night a great many of them had been removed. This work was carrled on yesterday and this morning the streets present nost their usval appear- ance, with the exception of Twenty-fourth street, which has as yet been practically unmolested The Street Street Fale Fair association sald yes- ter that it could not tell how it had ome out, but in all probability it would b losing venture the part of the incorporators. A great many of the busi ness men who had subscribed money have as yet falled to pay up, so It is a hard [ on | matter to tell just what will be the finan- clal result of the enterprise. The fair association does not lay the ailure to mismanagement, but says that fn such etifiing weather as has been had no crowd could be expected and It was only the natural result. They say that the great mistake was in not holding it elther earller or this fall. Plun to Save Arena. There is considerable pressurs being brought to bear upon the Street Fair asso- clation and the private individuals who own the amphitheater where the bull fights have been held to prevent the large struc- ture on the corner of Twenty-fifth and O streets from being torn down The fact that this bullding or arema 1s so well built leads many to believe that with little additional expense it could be made into an excellent convention hall and auditorium. In its present condition the arena will seat from 000 to 8,000 people and ull that is necessary to maje it in shape for use the year round is tout a roof overhead and to stop up some of the cracks in the boarding near the ground. For athletic exhibitions, concerts, con- ventlons 2nd assemblies of different char- acter there is no question but what it would be a great thing for the town, and 1t 1s%hought that the Commercial club at its next meeting, whenever that will take place, will try to arrange some plan for the preservation of the amphitheater. Additional Stock Penw. The Union Stock Yards company will at once commence the erection of new stock pens on the northwest corner of 1ts estab- lishment. The grading has just been com- pleted at a cost of over $12,000 and about seven acres have been leveled off for the use of these enclosures.. The demand for extra pens is occasioned by the Increase in the stock business at this point and also from the fact that South Omaha becoming @ center for range horses and these pens are built for that especial purpose The police department s being showered with congratulations on fts work in han- dling the night crowds of the past street fair. Contrary to all expectations there has been but little trouble on the streets and disturbers have been promptly ar- rested. It seems to be the general im- preesion that the bulk of special police- men who were appointed to do duty during fair week wera really unnecessary, as the local police force could have easily han- dled the crowd. Chief of Police Mitchell #aid last night that he was much gratified at the work his men had done Meets Tonight, will hold a regular sesslon tonight and will attempt to allow some bills for salaries of officers. The police department has not received any pay now for about four months and all salaries are delinquent, ranging from two to three monthe. It fs expected that at tonight's meeting everything will be cleared up under the new annual appropri- ation. The condition of John Queenan, who was stabbed Saturday afternoon by Pompey Moore, is about the same and he does not show any Indications of rallying The attending physicians say that the wound is an extremely dangerous one and that Queenan has about an equal show between living and dying from its effects.
