The resolution embracing the streets proposed to be paved will come up for final action and determination at the meeting of the city council tonight, having been postponed from the session of Mon- day. While a few minor changes may be made in the resolution, It is not expected any important streets contained therein will be cut out. Some opposition is looked for from cer- tain property owners in the Fourth ward who have expressed a preference for but it is understood that the alder- | men will declde in favor of brick. These streets are: Sixth and th streets from | Broadway to Fifth avenie, Eighth street from Broadway to Eighth avenue and First avenue from Pearl street to Eighth street The petitions for asphalt so far filed with the city clerk do mot represent a majority of the Interested property owners whose holdings abut on these streets. Several of the property owners who attached their slgnatures to the petitions expressed their preference for homemade brick. A official who bas given the matter considel able attention is authority for the stat ment that the petitions on fila demonstrate that the property owners as a rule are not | anxlous for asphalt, but that the real estate men and rental agents are the prime movers in the agitation against brick on the streets in the Fourth ward It is understood the council has decided to order these streots paved with either Des Molnes or Galesburg brick for top | course, with the cement filler. Experience bas shown that brick with the cement filler makes the most durable paving possible and that it practically needs no repairing at least for a iong number of years. What bas been demonstrated on North Main street, which was paved last year. While | this was lald with homemade brick for both courses. the addition of the cement filler has. In the opinion of Mayor Jennings and other city officials, made it one of the best paved streets in the city, The city officials with few exceptions are | unalterably opposed to asphalt, on the grounds of the expense the city would be put to in keeping it In repair. This expense cannot be taxed to the property owners and would have to be borne by the eity. This, | Mayor Jennings contends, the city is not in a flnancial condition to do. It has been contcnded by some of tbe | an ordinance making the road of Park ave- | thus materially | make aldermen that the agitation in the Fourth ward for asphalt is merely a plan to pre- vent any paving in that section of the city this year. It will not succeed, they say, as | the streews will be ordered paved and with brick A canvass made by the dermen last fall showed that the majority of the property owners in the Fourth ward who | will have to pay for the cost of the im- | provement of the streets want brick. They expressed themselves in favor of brick not only, they said, because of the cheaper first cost, but because they belleved it would last lon without need of repairing. In connection with the proposed paving, City Engineer Entyre will tonight submit nue from Pomona street to the entrance of Fairmount park twenty-four feet wide, educing the cost of the paving of this street, half of which will have to be paid by the city out of the eral improvement fund.
