PESALTY IS NOW ATTACHED Governer Dietrioh Bigns the New Oompul sery Ednoation Bill. BOYS AND GIRLS MUST GO TO $CHOOL Old Law Was a Dead Letter, but it 18 Believed that in Its Amended Form it Will Be iMective, One thousand children in Omaha will be forced into school by the new compulsory education law, to which Governor Dietrich has attached his signature, The law makes it possible to {mpose a fine on the parents or guardians who fail to keep their wards in school. Under the so-called compulsory education law which was on the Nebraska statute books there was no penalty for violations and as a result the law was a dead letter. “From the figures which have been glven to us by enumerators employed by the Board of Education I have estimated that there are about 1,000 children in the city who will fall within the provisions of the new law,” remarked sperintendent Pearse of the Omaha schools. "It is not Itkely that all of these children can be brought into schools. Private schools will get many of these children and it is prok able that the increased attendance in the publie schools as a result of the law will not exceed 400, From Seven to Fourteen. “In citles where school continues nine months all children between the ages of 7 and 14 will be requirad to attend chool for at least six months. In country districts and small towns, where the school year fs shorter, the number of months of enforced attendance is less. Granting that 500 more children are thrown into the Omaha schools by the new law, the effect on any one school will not be great “The Omaha schools contain about 50 rooms which are used by kindergartens an grades. Five bundred children equally dis- tributed among these rooms would not be felt. The children who do not attend school Tive mostly in the lower part of the eity, however. In the exclusive residence por- tions of the city most of the children are fn school.
