B. Woodland, A. M., of Peddle institute, Hightstown, N. J., as he lectured in Boyd's theater last evening was not the first to believe in his theory; Galileo was not the first to think of the telescope; Samuel F, B Morse was not the first who knew some- thing about the electric telegraph ‘People have for a long time quoted “There I8 no new thing under the sun,’ but there fs an exception that proves the rule I have the honmor tonight to present that exception, which i liquid air Liquid air was first produced by Prot. James Demar of the Royal institute of London, England, May 11, 1868, He pro- duced it in small quantities and is quoted as saying less than a year ago that a gal- lon would cost $2,500. To the sons of America belong the honor of producing it in large amounts, and Charles E. Tripler of New York was the firet to manufacture it by the barrel, thereby reducing the eost to 16 cents per gallon, “Alr is liquefled by subjocting It to ex trewely great pressure and at the same time using the principle of evaporation to cool It. After a pressure of 300 pounds to the square inch is reached the air is al- lowed to flow through pipes immersed in water, after which it I8 returned to the compressing chamber and the preseure in creased. This is repeated until at 1.200 pounds it turns into a liquid. When we coreider (hat factories in New York are turning 1t out at the rate of forty gallons an hour we have some idea of the progress made in overcoming the obstacles met with in its manufacture. Mr, Woodland illustrated many experiments A bouquet of roses was dipped in liquid air and became hrittle as glass and cracked into fragments between the fingers A quantity of mercury frozen into a block was used as a_hammer to drive spikes into a piece of hard wood Alcohol wag frozen into a crystal mass Mr. Woodland explained that when mixed with liquid air it becomes a dangerous explosive. When a small tube was fastened in o flask containing liquid alr the rapid evap- oration of the air caused a beautitul foun- tain of white spray The most interesting and the most para experiment was the burning of a stick of carbon in a tumbler of and liquid air. When the carbon was heated and dipped into the liguid it burned fu- riously. Cranberries were at the same time dropped in the tumbler and frozen The capacity of the theater was taxed the audience that listened eagerly to Mr. Woodland's lecture, HYMENEAL Omaha, 31.—(Special.)— Miss Alice Maud hie talk with Takes Bride ¢ BEATRICE, Neb., Jan.
