THE O\IAHA DAILY_ BEE: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 27, 1900, JACK MAHER SLIDES oUT| Ma Eelly's Confidentinl Man Makes Himse!f Bearce. H 5 IMPORTANT LINK IN BRIBERY CASE gh Out on 8700 Honds Friends Gind to Have it For to Keep Him Away. Jack Maher of South Omaha, known as M Kelly's confider.tial man, has been missing from his usual baunts since last week and it is reliably reported that his absence {8 peculiarly timed to help the mayor out of a hole in the bribery cases pending against him Maher left South Omaha last Friday and s supposed to be in Chicago. is place of business at 327 Rallroad avenue, where he formerly ran a restaurant and saloon with gambling attachments, i3 under direc- tion of his brother and it is sald that he gave a bill of sale for his interest in it before he took his departure. Mra, Maher left South Omaha about two weoks ago, giving it out that sho was go- ing to Hammond, Ind., on zccount of the slcknesa of relatives there. Maher has been living in a flat at 2408 N street. The rooms are occasionally occupled by Jerry Maher, his brother, but the rent is now overdue and the agent for the flat asserts that he does not know where Maher is and has an idea that he will not return, which 1s making him anxious about the rent still owing The particular feature of Maher's parture which interests the public out of the arrest of Maher for obtaining money under false pretenses and of Mayor Kelly for accepting bribes about a month ago. These warrants were issued by County Judge Vinsonhaler and Maher's pre- liminary nearing has not yet taken place. Milk in the ( nut. In the hearing of one of the charges mgainst Mayor Kelly it was disclosed by the testimony that the brewers doing business in South Omaha have been held up for varfous sums of money, which were traced futo the hands of George Tierney and Henry Mies. Before Tierney or Mies could be placed upon the stand to tell the next step in tho transfer of the coln which worked so promptly in reversing Mayor Kelly's Sunday closing order, the muyor walved further examination, to glve him time to frume up a defense. According to the county attorney, this money would have been traced next to Maher, and Maher would have been com- pelled to tell what he did with it. Maher 18 out on bonds in the sum of $700, with his hearing set for January 7, his surety being George L. Dare, the plumbing contractor of South Omaha, who also has close rela- tions with Mayor Kelly “Maher’s jumplog is too transparent for anything,” said a South Omaha business man who has been prominent In several movements to rid the city of corrupt city officers. *“Maher was simply up agalnst it. There Is no question but what the brewers’ money went Into his hands. If to protect Kelly he was willing to admit that he kept it, 1t would be almost the same as pleading gullty to obtalning money under false pre- tenses, with a sure penalty in front of him. If he gave first thought to himself and ac- knowledged having turned it over to Kelly, the mayor would have a hard time wriggling out of his bribery case. The $700 bond wouldn't be anything to these fellows, if forfeiting it would block the prosecution, and if Dare didn’t want to put it up him- self Kelly's friends would see that It was made good. No, Maher will not be back here unless he {8 hauled back on & requisi- tion." JAGS ARE INEXPENSIVE Three Dollars and Costs in the Price of & Christmas Load of Ken- tucky Dew. de- It was “the morning after” in police court yesterday and when that tribunal was assembled Judge Learn was faced by a crowd different from that which generally greets him upon his arrival at the office. There were several old offenders, but the greater part of the men who were arraigned were persons who seldom appear in the police court but who had permitted their celebration of Christmas to get the better of thelr usual discretion. There was hardly a sound heard in the whole crowd and without exception each one of the Christmastide offenders was penitent and not impecunious. Before the mon were disposed of $3 and costs had come to be considered the standard price of a Christmas jag which had produced a black eye or a scarred face. NEW STYLES 1IN 'S SHIRTS. Novelties in Ev The B. & W. shirt, recently Introduced by Earl & Wilson, in every way equals the E. & W. collars and cuffs. Its manufac- turers feel that they could have aimed at no higher standard of excellence, and, therefore, the E. & W. shirt was not in- troduced untll «his extreme degree of per- fection had been atttained. The results Justity the comparison. Thelr latest novelty in dress shirts is the Prince Albert No. 2. The bosom is made ot corded and plaited cords in clusters, alter- nating with plaits in combinations delight- ful to the eye. This firm s in the happlest condition pos- #ible to meet the demand of the most fas- tidious for evenlug requisites in shirts, collars and cufts. Thelr range of collurs covers everything In the best of taste and absolutely correct form. They have modi- fications of thelr varlous shapes, so that comfort as well as style may be assured to the consumer. One of the latest collars introduced by Barl & Wilson is the Waupun. It is just the thing to wear with the informal even- ing dress dinner jackets. Thelr new col- lar for full dress is the Sewanee, two fnches high in the back and two and one- haif in the front, with a slight poke effect, weeting quite close in front The E. & W. dress shirts are about as close to perfection as 1t 1s possible for human hands, backed by vast experience, to make. These goods can be obtalned from any of the prominent retailers. CHANG ME Vin Wabush Ratlrond. MeCarthy of Dizon County an A. Andrews of Furnas County Are the Other Aspirants for the Honor. The latest turn in the contest for the speakership for the coming legislature is the withdrawal of Dr. R. W. Lafiin of Gage county, who has pooled his {ssues with W. G. Sears of Burt county. Mr. Laflin, who was In Omaha yesterday, naturally belleves that his combination with Sears will make sure of the latter's election. although the candidacy of J. J. McCarthy of Dixon county and J. A, Andrews of Furnas still stand in the way. Speaking of his with- drawal, Mr. Laflin sald: “It {8 true that I bave withdrawn as a candidate for speaker in favor of Mr. Sears. It is also true that I consider the election of Mr. Sears almost a certainty. The con- test for the speakership has been waged in a very friendly manner and when the selec- tion is made it will be made with practical unanimity by the republican members. “It 18 best for the state and it is essential to the well being of the republican party (that the speakership question should be [settled without leaving the slightest of i1~ feeling on any side, as it undoubtedly will be. The South Platte people have had the speakership for several consecutive ses- slons and we feel that it 1s only fair that the honor should go north of the river this time." Messrs, Sears and Laflin met here yester- day for a consultation before the announce- ment of Mr. Laflin’s withdrawal from the speakership race was made. They left to- gether in the afternoon for Lincoln. Mr. Sears did not have much to say, but ex- pressed himself as confident of his position in the contest for the honor of presiding over the lower house of the Incoming legls- lature.
